So far it's better than the paint that was on my Subarus.

I have a few tiny chips at the front of the hood (to be expected for a 3-4 year old truck), but that's about it for flaws.

This actually depends on what year the truck is and the country it was built in. Between 2005 and 2010 the uaw had some part in building the tacoma.

    Man you guys are harsh.

It's not the paint. Paint is paint. All manufacturers are using a water born paint. All the manufacturers are still using a solvent based clear coat. (on vehicles with clear coat and not single stage paints.)

The paint is the same. What's different is the amount of paint. Paint has mass. Mass hurts fuel economy. The more paint you put on, the heavier the vehicle. The heavier the vehicle, the lower it's fuel economy will be. The DOT and EU are mandating ever increasing fuel economy standards. So vehicle manufacturers have to do what they can. Less paint is a simple no brainer. All they want is for it to get out of the warranty period with no major problems. After that, it's not their problem...

Something tells me it'd be more for cost cutting than fuel economy.

I just don't see a gallon or so more paint being heavy enough to have a measurable difference in MPG.

Yes, I've been meaning to post a similar question on this subject. The paint IS flaking off in several spots on my 2007 white sport hood, 100K miles. The gray under-primer is still fine, just the outer white layer flecking off. There are already a couple half dollar sized spots and growing.

I saw another white one about the same age as mine in the service bay at the dealer and were multiple strips gone on his hood, several inches wide by several feet long. But still good gray primer remaining.

Now granted the sun in down here is pretty rough on paint jobs, but in experience, the white vehicles are usually the last ones to go. I've had other white cars still looking pretty good after 15 years or more.

And don't misunderstand, I've had thousands of paint chips and bugs before. But normally that stays just a chip and the surrounding paint is still stuck solid. But the places I am talking about keep growing. I.E. The surrounding paint seems OK at first but a month later the hole is bigger.

This all would be a non-issue if companies would've followed DeLorean's example and made the panels out of stainless steel. :D

Toyota's Super White doesn't have a clear coat making it more prone to chipping. FWIW Ford"s Crown Vic PI White and GM's commercial truck/van White chips and flakes off too.

My 03 accord had cheap paint. I think my Tacoma is a slight notch better.

In response to the ongoing stupidity on this thread, (not you mod)you know who you are, I will be off to join several GMC and Chevy truck forums masquerading as a Chevy owner, all the while telling them how great Toyota products are.
