    Hello all,

Ive just come to the conclusion that toyota did a poor job and used cheap thin ass paint to paint my truck. Im not sure if you guys have the same problem. But Ive noticed on top of my cab a bug splatter caused my paint to be chipped.
also around my headlights the bugs are causing little paint chips. Does anyone else have a complaint about their paint job? Ill post pics in later this afternoon.

Yes, I completely agree...Toyota paint is terrible, compared with my GM vehicles. I have lots of nicks and it seems very thin on the door.hood edges...and I have to wax like 4 times a year compared to 1 or 2 with my Chevys to keep the dirt from accumulating.

On the Tacoma/Tundra factory tour...they talk about the paint being this super environmentally friendly paint...almost as if it is water based. I told them it sucked and they just need to use Dupont like everyone else.

Its the new water based paint. I have a 1984 Cressida wagon with almost flawless original paint. The 2014 Tacoma wont hold up like that.

According to my detailer, the paint on the hood and roof of 2nd gen Tacomas is frighteningly thin.

I had a full paint correction done on my X when I first bought it. He used a paint thickness gauge on each panel and according to him he had to proceed with extreme caution on the hood and roof. Sides and tailgate of the truck had plenty of paint.

ATO front skid (need more but icon's might fail if I hang anything else from my truck) All-Pro front bumper thanks to a good deal here and a pesky encounter with a rock or 20, total chaos uppers.
So buying a UAW built truck will ultimately end my right to bear arms? Any chance your reaching a little with that generalisation?

I've been in the wash and detail business for Fifteen years and IMO Toyota has the crappiest paint of all manufacturers. Although if you leave bugs laying on any brand of unwaxed paint long enough it will eat through the clearcoat. Toyota's clearcoat breaks down by far the fastest. Still, if you keep a decent coat of wax and better yet a sealer and wash the bugs off regularly it's a non issue.
I can't tell you how many times I've seen a few months old vehicle's paint ruined because the owner didn't wash the bugs off in a reasonable amount of time. Often times, the dealer will sale them an expensive "super sealant" when they buy the car new and tell them they never have to wax it. Then they drive around with bugs cooking in the hot sun for a while and they trip out when you tell them the only way to fix it is to repaint.

I'm afraid until we see some actual scientific evidence much of this conversation will be academic. However, what is provable is reliability. And I'm sure a lot of these vehicles look real good on the side of road with their shiny paint job. And they look even better under the shining lights of a repair shop with major component failures starting at 50,000 miles to ensure job security. that's right ,pre planned obsolescence. The resale values alone tell the story. they are not that high because of propaganda or effective advertising, or commercials they're there because when people spend 30 and 40 and 50 thousand dollars on an item and get burned many don't return.

Odd. My experience is quite the opposite. For an example My wife's Sienna Van 1998, sold it in 2012 and the paint looked excellent but for a couple of rock chips on the hood. before that her 1985 Camry Sold in 1998 with 200K miles same on the paint excellent but for a fe rock chips in the front and hood.

How often do you think my wife washed and waxed either of those cars? never! I would break down and do it after I couldn't stand it any longer. It would usually go 6 to 12 months between washings / waxing.

I'm not saying that is evidence to prove or disprove anything. Just a couple of my experiences with Toyota paint.

I can also say that I seem to see lots more Ford, GM, Dodge and Honda's with the clear coat blown off than I do Toyota's. However I have seen a few god awful Toyota's.

I concur. There is almost no clear coat on it. I keep my vehicles immaculate, and do it all myself. What I have noticed on my Tacoma, compared with my GM cars....I wash my vehicles down in one of those traditional bays....if all the grime does not come off as I normally wash it...that means it is time to wax. I.E. if there is sill a film of grime when you go to dry it off...it needs waxing. My GM car needs this 1 maybe twice a year. Tacoma...4-5 times a year, there is literally no clear coat and wax does not seem to last on it.
And the spots where it has chipped, you can see the paint layer is much thinner than a chip on my GM vehicles.
But I will say this as far as paint fade in the sun. I unfortunately have to park my vehicles in the Texas sun year round at work...and the Tacoma paint has not faded any in the 3 years I have owned. But as far as I know the problem with paint fade seemed to go away in the 90s with all major car manufacturers.

A lot of the Japanese cars seem to have pretty weak paint. All the hondas, acuras, and toyotas I've had chip and scratch very easily. It's my wiife's biggest complaint with her TSX. Everytime she washes it there are new chips on the hood.

Mine is fine I have no issue with the paint been through nearly 4 winters of Northern New England winters salt, stones etc. don't see where it any worse that the rest of the trucks on the road still shiny minor paint chips on the leading edge of the hood no way to avoid that.

Toyota's paint is like armor compared to the chip-tastic paint job on my Infiniti.

I wouldn't feed him anymore bread, he'll keep going on about how paint jobs and gun rights are connected.

I thought I read somewhere, not that long ago, that the EPA is really laying the pressure on automotive companies to remove VOC's from their painting processes. The end result is weaker paint.
