Just curious how long has your OEM battery lasted? I have a group 24F battery in my 2012.

While only 3 years old, the OEM battery was struggling in cold weather if I didn't have the truck plugged in overnight. It was still able to get the truck going at -25C (~ -15F), but with a lot of hesitation that did not make me feel confident in its future performance.

I didn't want to wait for colder weather to find out if it would fail or not, so I just replaced it. I'd like to know if others have had better experience with theirs.

I replaced my OEM after 5 years.... and it wasn't even 'done' yet. I replaced it as a precaution. I replaced it with another OEM Toyota battery. Probably 3 years on it now.... When in the 'teens' (temps), it always starts but it sounds labored. I don't know if that's the batteries fault or the fact its trying to start a cold engine. ??? My truck doesn't see below Zero - not a fair comparison.

I got a solid 3 years out of mine. I never saw cold days like you were seeing though. When i had to replace it though it was in single digits weather wise.

Battery life is unpredictable. Today's vehicles are loaded with current-robbing gadgetry.

It will die when it dies.

I have a 2009 Canadian truck (not sure if they use different batteries for different markets) with 85,000 kms and still on the ORIGINAL battery.
Left the country for work for a month, just got back and in -10°C weather it started up, slightly laboured, after about 3-5 seconds more cranking then it usually does.

On a related note, my dad acquired a couple TOYOTA branded batteries a few years ago... We threw one in my `94 Dakota, drove it for about a year and a half with it, then I got my Tacoma and the Dakota has been sitting out behind the garage for over a year now. A few weeks back he had to jockey a bunch of vehicles around and the couple (including my Dakota) that had the Toyota batteries started up with no issues while most the other vehicles with aftermarket (some newer) batteries pretty much all needed boosts.

In conclusion, my next battery will say TOYOTA on it.

My 09 has 94 000 km on it and up till this week was still on the original OEM battery , which did not fail , I just decided to replace it with a Northstar AGM 27F

All the Canadian 6 lug trucks come with the group 27F battery IIRC

I'm on my original battery....this May will be 4 yrs. Still going strong as far as I can tell. Started fine the other morning at -15F.

When I replaced the battery on my previous vehicle (1999 F150), the guy at the battery shop (Interstate) said hot weather is actually harsher on a battery than cold weather.

    Any truth to that?

Is it still -15F? Did the new battery make it start better?

Yes he is correct. That and being left idle for extended periods of time.Always best to use a battery tender if your not starting your vehicle for extended periods of time.

i have a 2007 with original 27F battery.Still starts fine even in -30F without being plugged in.

I think that all Canadian V6 trucks have the 27F, while the 4 cyl 6 lug trucks have a 24F.

Batteries last longer in cold climates. I live in Vegas. If a battery lasts 3 years we are lucky. We buy the 5 year warranty, so about 35 months it dies and we get free replacement.

Yes, I will add my agreement to this. I live in a cold climate (Indiana) and rarely even think of replacing a battery. Cold reduces a battery's amperage during the cold weather but doesn't damage it internally. Heat shortens its actual life.

The other thing about starting batteries is that if you have never deep-cycled them, they can last practically forever. One time of running it down below about 10 volts may shorten its life; two or three and you probably can't count on it. A lot of people don't realize that starting batteries aren't cell phone batteries and they really can't be deep discharged to below 90 percent capacity without risking damage.

Proper battery maintenance involves periodically checking the electrolyte levels in each of the cells. I find I need to do this about every 5 to 6 months on my 2013 Tacoma with OEM battery and be sure NOT to overfill the cells when you add the distilled water.

He is correct due to the accelerated grid corrosion and sulfation. Please see the battery life map in the beginning of Section 7 in the Car and Deep Cycle Battery FAQ on www.batteryfaq.org.

Battery in my Mazda was over 11 years old when I replaced it. Was still starting the car, but sounded like it was going to die anyday. It was a jell type battery.

In below temperatures below 20 degrees F, I quick connect a small "smart" temperature compensated battery charger/maintainer to my battery when garaged. By keeping the battery fully charged, this enables quick starting, prevents freezing, and increases battery life. Every three months, I remove any terminal corrosion, add distilled water (if required), fully recharge the battery, and test the Cold Cranking Amp performance. I plan to replace the battery when it's CCA performance is 80% of the OEM recommendation for the vehicle. I also use 0W-20 (GF-5 SN) synthetic engine oil.
