Ok might be a dumb question so bear with me. I have a 2.7l and want 33s would a skinnier 33 inch tire feel more like a wide 32? Im not sure if more contact patch and more mass in general would cause it to be more sluggish if that makes sense. I want to do an overland type vehicle but don't want to re gear till later down the road.

Nobody answered so I will give it a try. Tire height is the big hitter here. The taller the tire, the lower your effective gear ratio. If you run 33s with your 2.7 and don't change gesrs it will definitely be more "sluggish." Next impact is weight. Big tires weigh more and usprung weight is the enemy. Understand the tradeoff and make sure it's worth it. More width does increase rolling resistance but of the three factors it has the least impact.

Agree w steelhd. Also, if you want to experiment a bit before you buy new tires/wheels, check out this gear ratio calculator. http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html The experiment is to plug your numbers in, and figure out what your highway and around town rpms would be with 33's. They'll be lower than they are now, obviously. Then, for example, drive on the highway in 5th gear at the new lower rpm, and see if you can tolerate the sluggishness. And you have to mentally factor in tire weight vs your existing setup. If you new setup is much heavier than your existing setup, it will be even more sluggish than it feels above in the experiment.

I have the 4.0....With a skinny 33 inch tire. You can see my info on the side of my name to see what exactly I have.

My truck is a lot more sluggish, but its still pretty decent. With a 2.7 I would imagine it would be worse. Gas mileage takes a huge hit too! on top of that, when you drive down the freeway, your truck will drift all over the place depending on how and where the wind is hitting your truck. Its manageable but it is noticeable.

Maybe skinny 32s would be my best bet. I should of said rolling resistance instead of rotating mass.

Yeah, I'd say go with 235/85/16. That's 31.7" and nice and narrow. A lot of people run these and like them.

tire patch is a function of air pressure not width....
well total size.... more width just makes the patch skinnier and wider
unless your off road or in snow.

I do like those but have a 2.7 and don't have the means to re gear at the moment.

Here's my take - the only real skinny tire option is going to be the 235 or 255/85 16 - both of those tires I think only come in the BFG KM2s - and it happens to be those tires are also built for heavy duty dualies (they are used for front tires) so they are 10 ply and heavy... I would bet you could find a LIGHTER 285 as you could get a P rated or LT rated tire instead of the 10 plys... I run the 255/85 KM2s and like them a lot, but they are not light tires...

    this.

Get something like the Hankook Dynapro ATM RF10 in a P265/75R16 and your looking at only 1.5lbs more than the stock 265/70R16's

This is my advice as well. I have the Dynapros on my truck in a 265/70/17 and I am very pleased with them, they are superb on and off road.

Also, they are one of the lightest ATM tires out there.

Otrattw switches, black vinyl armrest mod, clazzio leather seat covers with heaters, flowmaster dual exhaust, hornblasters train horns,
I had the 235/85/16 km2s. They're a very heavy tire. Load range e. And what size rim you using? I had mine mounted on a 8 inch rim, they had to use a air blaster to seat the bead, and I was always concerned about getting a flat and popping the bead especially on the highway.

Not just KM2s. There are 20 or 30 options for 235/85-6 tires but you are right that most are 10 ply load range E. Discountedwheelwarehouse dot com has at least one C (6 ply) and one D (8 ply) option.

Wait, save your money, and do it once, do it right. And you'll want to recalibrate your speedo/odo.

Recognize the MPG loss, handling & ride impacts as well.

If you are going to actually need what you are building for usage, those penalties are fine.

If you are going to mall crawl (be a poseur), well, it's your truck. When I hear 'they look good' as opposed to 'what will get me through terrain xyz', poseur is what pops to mind.

I dont mall crawl haha. I got a nice gash in the bumper of my 2015 on a trail the 2nd day of owning it. But have done fine on the trails that I do without re gears such as 3.73 and 33s on my jeep. I do want a re gear but for the mean time i think i can deal with it. Theres a fellow on here with a 2.7 expo build and he didn't re gear for a long time and he did crazier trails than I do.
