Driving home on the freeway today and rock smashed into my windshield, leaving a crack that is about half an inch long. I am going to leave it for now, but I am sure I will need to replace it sooner or later if it grows

I have a rear view mirror with temp gauge and backup camera, my question is can I have anyone replace the windshield (i.e. Safelite or whatever) or do I need to bring it somewhere specific because of the electronics involved? I honestly don't know how much the actual windshield plays a part in the temp gauge etc...

    Thanks

You'll be fine with any auto glass place. I already had to replace my windshield due to a asshat who thought it was cute to shoot peoples windesheild with a bb gun around the neighborhood

BTW the windeshield doesn't play anything with the outside temp gauge. The gauge sensor is up front behind the grille.

Good to know, thanks. How much was your replacement if you don't mind me asking?

all normal (that is they known what they are doing) windshield places know how to handle mirrors and whatnot for any car. nothing special here.

if you are going to wait, get some glass repair kit on that crack now, it will keep it from cracking further

Mine was about roughly $220 at a small shop, it's where my Toyota dealership referred me to for all their vehicles.

Like others have said any good windshield place will be able to handle this.
I also have a mirror like you and a windshield replacement would not be a problem for any of the electronics.

I've used Safelite many times and haven't had any problems.

And perhaps - you need to specify the exact type of glass you want. We always specify OEM replacement.

We had the windshield in our corvette replaced. The glass needed to be a special type of glass because (can't remember what its called) the gauge info is projected onto the windshield. My husbands Acura windshield was replaced also - again, OEM replacement.

I'm sure, if you don't specify.... and/or you are limited with insurance coverage, your gonna 'get what you pay for'

    Yeah it's not like we're driving a Ferrari ;)

It depends where the crack is at. I know in California you're not allow to repair a windshield if the crack is directly in front of the driver's view since the repair can obstruct the view of the driver making it unsafe.

10-4 on the insurance company. Had mine replaced for free on one of the Tundras, said one free windshield per vehicle.
