Washed my truck the first decent day we had and had caking on the bottom of my bedside above the tail pipe. I've never seen this on any truck. Even my diesels that give it extremely high EGTs. Anyone else seen this?

Mine has soot on it, and most I have seen also have it.
    I like the skinny pedal.

Didn't notice the pedal. This isn't soot. More more like cooked on grime on a stove top.

Look something like this? It's a pain in the *** to get off sometimes. Usually, a clay bar will work.
The reference to the skinny pedal was in regards to driving habits (I assume). These trucks run a bit rich as it is, and heavy throttle will only add to it. The black staining/buildup that is on the fender is because of this.

Yes, I don't understand what causes it. A lot of it came off with hot soapy water and elbow grease. But what a pain!

I have this and I have just been calling it a stain. I was pretty bummed when I saw it because it was before a hand wax I was giving the truck and I couldn't get it off in the wash. As for the skinny pedal, I drive my baby real nice so I don't think it is driving habits. I thought it might have been because I hadn't waxed it in over a year and probably didn't wash it all summer. I drive her nice but I like her dirty.

Dealership said their fix on the Tundra was to put a tip on it to get it further away from the body. I call BS! I think it is a tuning issue and they a extremely lazy!

I have had the issue with my Tacomas for ten years. http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/299941-exhaust-stain-rear-fender.html It usually shows up just in winter.

There really isn't a fix unless you reroute your exhaust a bit. Once or twice a year I go at the stain with Meguiar's Ultimate Compound applied with a buffer. My dealer doesn't have an answer other than..."keep it waxed".

I think that it is caused by condensation from the exhaust system collecting dust and then hardening. I'm quite sure that the rear mudflap exacerbates the problem in that it cause a turbulence in the area of the tailpipe outlet. An extension beyond the end edge of the mudflap would probably correct the problem but it would look like hell.

I should add...my Tacomas have always been in good tune and I use quality gasoline.
