With the recent storm, I went out to play with my fairly new DSCB. For the first time I put the truck in 4 LO and needless to say I was shocked. In first gear, I didn't see any difference in rpms between 4 LO and 4 HI. I will admit that I didn't go thru a bunch of gears but from 0-10mph, the rpms went up to 2k with both HI and LO.

For reference sake, I remember with my old 95 Toyota Pickup 4 LO was much, much lower geared. Is this normal or what?

Are you sure 4 LO engaged? If you heard beeping it wasn't engaged. Make sure you come to a COMPLETE stop, push the clutch the entire way down and then turn the knob to 4 LO. You will hit 2k rpm a lot faster!

Yeah it was beeping. But it was beeping for a bit of time like 15 seconds. How long do I need to wait for it to engage?

If it doesn't engage, scoot forward or backwards a few feet, come to a complete stop in neutral and try again.

Also, as stated, make sure the clutch is completely depressed.

If it's beeping and no light on your dash, it's not engaged. Simple as that.

On the side note why do you need 4Lo in the sno ? (it reven rhymes) :D

99.9% of the time you run 4HI in the snow. 4low is more for rocks, logs when you need massive amount of steady torque.

Agree with what everyone is saying. You definitely weren't in 4 low. You would know for sure. Long Island got some decent snow, was able to take the truck out before most of the roads were paved. It was fun, traction is great in 4hi.

I try to use 4hi for a little while every month to keep everything working (use it or lose it). I've only messed with 4lo three or four times. Will shifting to 4hi lube up the same parts as shifting to 4lo? Or do I need to use both on a regular basis?

I have the locker too and realize I need to be in 4lo to give that a nice workout so my point is probably moot, just curious.

The same way you go into 4lo. I put my truck into 4lo then push the locker button until it blinks and put it in drive and it engaged. I hadn't used mine since the first winter I bought it back in '13/14.

Sometimes it does engage that easy... other times you need to turn the steering wheel full right (or left), then roll forward until it locks.

As troublesome as it can be to use, it is nice that the locker is only an emergency back up (since 2009), as A-TRAC turns on and works with such ease. There are a couple of instances when using both A-TRAC and the locker together can be advantages, but typically all Low Range driving with the A-TRAC in the on mode will be all you need to get anywhere!

Ok... So I tried doing it again and had no issues. It worked perfectly. I must not have depressed the clutch in; my 95 didn't need to.

I have a plow on mine and I use 4Lo but I was having trouble getting mine in yesterday. This thread helped that. (too bad it was after I plowed. The snow and slush was very heavy) I thought there was a problem with the truck but it was just me. After reading all this, I tried it and it went right into 4Lo.

This is my third toyota 4x4 pick up

At the 1st of the month, engage both the hi and low 4WD for a couple miles

usually in a straight line not to bind anything up

But I have never had a drive train issue ever.
