BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Maybe an expandable frame(to fit different vehicle makes) with attachable/detachable units (grille, ice box, tool box, whirlpool tub :p or whatever you desire)

What does the heat, or possibly a grease fire do to the tailgate paint?

The underside of the insert is insulated with a hear shield, so it doesn't affect the paint

    Haha good to know!
Tentative plan is to have the 3 install options mentioned in the first post, which can cut cost for people who wanna self install

Since I bought the Tacoma a few years back I was interested in this along with adding storage to the tail gate for this exact purpose. If I were to consider such a product a few features are stand out as must haves.
    1. The product is integrated into the OEM gate and provides added strength
    2. Burners / Grill / Cutting board have at least minimal protection from elements (ie some aluminum cover)
    3. Under cutting board surface is storage for camp essentials
    4. Propane hook up is one simple recessed fitting on the side of the tail gate easily threaded
    5. Grill will have wind screens allowing for better heat control outdoors

Best outdoor / tail gating grill I have used is made by Soto. This is the level of quality I would want if I were to invest in an integrated product.

    Paul,

I like your idea and it looks like you are getting some solid feedback already. If I were to do something like this I would throw my hat into the "complete replacement" option as well and would have no problem with the tailgate being made a couple inches deeper.

One thing that we have invested into heavily here is the Snow Peak Iron Grill table series and the ability to select which option we want for a specific outing has made it ideal for us. With that said, limiting yourself to a BBQ insert only might be missing out on larger opportunities. Adding a fish/prep table insert, or a storage insert to your lineup might be worth considering.

As to expectations of price, for a solid well thought out piece that is modular with one of the above mentioned inserts I'd expect to pay five hundred dollars. I'd expect for it to be made with quality materials with the ability to thwart thieves with a locking handle assembly. Regardless of the direction you take with this I wish you the best with this project.
