I just changed my oil. Bought Pennzoil 5W30 Full Synthetic Platinum Motor Oil, 5 qt @ Walmart.

Purchased a WIX filter at O'Reilly's. Taking it back because it is shorter than the Toyota filter.

I put the whole 5Qt in and it was about 1/4 in between the two dots. Will check in the morning on top off if needed.

Going back to the dealer, they most likely have a drum of oil they purchase so they most likely won't be opening Quart bottles.

Do you remember the part number for the Wix? 51348 is the correct filter. If it was slightly smaller than the OEM, it is not a concern. They're well-built filters. More efficient than OEM, less efficient than others, though.

I also like Wix, but I use a 51516 - exact same specs except a longer case (about 1.4 inch longer) and same price as the 51348. Makes it a little easier to grab and take off by hand, plus more filter media.

The break-in oil that comes from the factory, is clearly different from Toyota's usual oil. It most likely contains an additive package specifically formulated for the break-in period. And, these engines come from the factory very very clean, so there is absolutely no reason to change out the oil before the first recommended oil change (5,000 miles for all of the 6 different Toyotas that I have owned).

In this day and age, it makes absolutely no sense to run your grandfather's dino oil, when there are so so many synthetics out there now. The esters are the best (eg. Redline), PAO's are ok (eg. Amsoil), and Group III (Mobil 1) is acceptable if saving a couple dollars on oil is more important, compared to the $40,000 you spent on your truck in the first place.

I like Mobil 1 filters. They filter down to 10 uM, where most filters will only do 40 uM. I never do an extended drain.

Do you warm up your engine before you do the oil change, let it cool down overnight, or something different?

When you do the oil change how much are you putting back in? I go by the dipstick and this last oil change I only put in 5qts as it was already 1/4 over the second mark. I check it in the morning as well and the level was still over the 1/4 mark. Last time I put the specified amount in I was overfilled per the dippy.

asuchemist....You may have misunderstood what I meant by "extended drain"??? I mean I never go 10,000 or 15,000 miles between drains. I keep it to 5,000 like the owner's manual says, especially in the very dusty southwest.

I always double glove and drain with a HOT engine, because that is when the oil is thinnest and will flow best. Then I will let it cool down quite a bit, before I mess with the oil filter.

Usually the recommended owner's manual fill amount has been close enough.

What kind of chemist are you?

Where exactly did you get this information? It is true with Hondas, but not Toyota.

Honda break-in oil contains a higher level of moly that needs to stay in until the 1st specified service interval.

Provide a credible link for your information.

Change it hot, and it is better not to let it drop for a long time. It is better to keep the engine surfaces coated with the old oil to minimize a dry startup.

There is also a raging debate about whether you should prefill your filter with oil. You can read the pros and cons for hours on bobistheoilguy.com

bilstein set at 1.75, Racho 5000 rear with 4 leaf kit, floor mats, high lift jack, pull hook in hitch, bed rail corner braces, severe duty brake pads and devil horns on the grill....
I get those by the case from discount fleet supply, it fits the taco, the 90 4Runner plus the 08 Jeep Wrangler...I also order the 51515 for some of the older ford and dodge applications and the inline gas filters for 1/4" and 5/16" hose size...

This notion is absolutely silly! Every time you turn off your engine, the oil in the top end drains down into the pan. You would have to restart every 10 minutes, to keep the top end completely wet.

But, take heart.....Ester based synthetic molecules are charged, like little magnets, and they stick to oppositely charged ferrous metal. So, when you shut the engine off, you leave at least a thin layer of oil behind adhering to the parts (particularly the valve train).

I am basing this on my own empirical observations. I have not had Toyota break-in oil tested.

Why bother anyway? I can get 300,000 miles out of an engine doing it Toyota's way....leaving it in until the first drain interval. If Toyota engineers thought we needed to change it sooner, they would have said so in the maintenance manual.

And, if anything, it has higher levels of ZDDP!

Out V6 Tacoma has around 22,000 miles so I am confident the engine is broken in by now.

Our two other cars REQUIRE synthetic oil so we want to make this change just so we can have one type of oil for all of our cars. The burning question in the manual says 5w30. Here is the Los Angeles area, the weather never really changes that much and I have always used 10w30. The other two cars use 10w30.

I really do not think it would make THAT MUCH of a difference, but if any experts could chime in, I would really appreciate it.

    Thanks

Go with the 5W30. Most engine wear happens at startup (even in balmey So Calif). The 5W will pump more easily, and therefore get up to pressure quicker.
