2000 miles on my 2015. I'm wondering if I should do the first oil change before 5k miles considering that there was a break-in period?

These are such EASY vehicles to change the oil on, no jacking needed, just put an oil catch pan under the front end, pull the plug, and the filter you can get from the top...a new truck might need a good band wrench, but 20 minutes including cleanup

2k is good for the initial change...then 3k, then every 5k.

Are you going to go synthetic or stick with fossil 5W-30? I'm at 1000 and the dealer said to bring it in and change it at 1500 for first one. However, they use fossil and I want to convert to synthetic at the 3000 mark but want to make sure rings are well broken in first

Now I'm just confused as all hell. My dealer instructed me to change my oil every 10,000 miles. Granted, I gave him the hairy eyeball when he did that. I asked about a break in oil change, and he again said every 10,000 miles. I want to switch over to synthetic oil with my new truck. What are the recommendations here for oil changes in a new Tacoma?

My dealer was willing to do my first chance at 1200 miles/2 months now going every 6 months.

According to that you have to have an engine that requires synthetic motor oil to qualify for the 10,0000mi/12mo oil service. It sounds like Toyota recommends you change it every 5,000mi/6mo with synthetic or mineral based oils if you don't fall into that category. As far as when the first one should be done... your guess is as good as mine?? Manual says 5k

Follow the Owners Manual and you wont go wrong! For Peace of Mind some like to change oil within the first 1500 to 3000 miles but in reality it isn't necessary with todays modern motors IMHO. Ill change mine at 3k then every 5k and I'll use Mobil 1. I get well over 150k out of my motors with no issues and they stay nice and clean inside. I believe the manual says 7500?

Good call Harley. I am that guy who commonly sits in a new vehicle with the owners manual for a couple of hours to get familiar with it. So, I pulled out the Warranty and Maintenance guide for my truck and Lo and Behold. There it is in black and white. Every 5,000 miles. Now why in the hell would the dealer tell me 10,000? Whatever. I do my own maintenance anyhow. When my odometer hits 5,000 miles, she'll see her first done of synthetic oil. :D

From all I've read/heard I think synthetic is the way to go. I'll be going that route as soon as I hit 1500.

As I read this, it does not pertain to the Tacoma, neither 4 nor 6 Cyl. The 2TR-FE (4-cyl) is not included, even though it specs 0w20.

I am debating whether to do my 1st change (I have 750 on my '15 TRD), or let the dealer do it. My only concern is that the factory oil filters are "supposed" to be difficult to get off. I may let the dealer tackle the 1st one, so that I don't have to invest in a 64mm cap wrench. I never put filters on tight enough to really need a wrench, so it would be a one-time use of a tool.

Anyone know if a dealer would change oil if I brought in my own oil (Mobil1 5W30) and filter? I'd prefer to use Syn consistently, after the factory fill.

I have never had a service provide refuse to use provided oil, but the usually still charge for theirs also. Just do your own change, mine took 20 minutes today including sweeping the snow and ice off the concrete, and cleaning the drain pan.

Take in your own Mobil 1 (much cheaper), but use the Toyota filter, as it has been reported to be as good as they get. I had my first change done at 1500 miles, and subsequent changes will be done on a time basis rather than mile basis until I use up the free service.

Additional stuff the dealer did no charge: Installed my Fumoto valve, and silenced the seat belt chime.

I always do my own oil changes, but am worried about the factory filter being tight.

With my luck, I have visions of an undriveable truck in my driveway because of a mangled filter, caused by me trying to get it off, and having to call a tow truck. :)

So I may let the dealer do the 1st one.

Just get a decent filter wrench the grips from the end, a band wrench that fits a socket extension is just about ideal.

Went to Oil Can Henry's this weekend. Went with Castrol GTX 5-30. The technician recommended doing the rear diff. at 15k. Seems low. I didn't do the diff. on my 98 Ranger until about 60k.

0W-20 goes in the 2.7l 4 cyl engine. Changed by dealer every 5K as part of Toyota Care plan. 0W-20 at this time is only available as a synthetic.

6 cyl 4.0l engine. Uses 5W-30 oil. Dealer provides dino oil.

If you are going to use Toyota Cares 5/10/25/20/25 plan for the 4.0l engine, then take what they provide. It will be plain Jane regular 5W-30 motor oil changed out every 5K. Who knows what your dealer will use. Some use Mobil 5000 because it's about as cheap as it gets. Some may use Valvoline/Castrol/etc.

If you ask for synthetic or bring your own, here's what could happen. In the first case, you'll be charged for it and get dino oil. In the latter case, you'll get dino oil and the tech will use your synthetic oil in his ride.

Use the dealers free oil changes for the 4.0l. It's too easy to verify that the filter was changed(it's on top) and same for oil. Pull the stick and look at it after they change to verify that it's new and that the level is correct. More than likely, the 5.5 qt. 4.0l engines will only get 5.0 qts. The dealer is not going to open and pour 1/2 a qt. Top it off yourself. 4.8 qt. engines will get 5 qts. The dealer is not going to compute 80% of 32 ounces and measure/pour accordingly.

Once you are done with the freebie oil changes, use whatever you like and do the work yourself.
