Started new job that requires driving 80-90 miles a day, so I picked up a used 14 year old Dodge Ram, 5.2 V8 (had low miles 68K) for $3000. I'm selling the Tacoma as I just flat out don't want to trash this truck with a ton of highway miles, I can count on one hand how many times I've driven it in the last three months despite loving it. Anyway, I purchased my '14 Tacoma TRD, DCSB, 4x4, Off-Road new (unfortunately) over the summer, gave $34,500 OTD for it cash, with every conceivable option possible for 2014. Has Nav, JBL, along with the full Entune setup, truck also has the full stock tow pkg and is 100% bone stock.

Have 5700 miles on it, not a blemish on this truck anywhere, tires even still have dimples on them and the truck still smells new, it's the newer silver color that stared I think in 2014??.

I went to CarMax just to see what they would give me, and they are at $30K even. Was hoping for $32,000 ish given the miles are almost like new off the lot. Anyway, If I put up for sale myself on Autotrader (Don't want to deal with Graigslist people) what should I ask? A local Toyota dealer offered $26K I LoL'd and left.

Fun fact, I'm getting about 1 mpg worse commuting with this beater 1/2 ton Ram bought with the 318 engine. It gets about 15.7-15.0 +/- highway, where my V6 Tacoma was pulling about 16.5-17.0 ish.

30k is actually decent. You could take that in writing and get a better offer from another dealer though.

You're sure you want to do this? I dunno. Wait until that Dodge starts putting you in the dog house and you may feel a little differently. Do you really want to do this all, again?

Yeah, I took the CarMax offer to Toyota, and they told me some BS that they have too many new ones to sell to give that much. They also had several '12 & '13 TRD's used with anywhere from 25-35K miles, asking $33 & $35K for used :eek:

I'm thinking I might take it to a Chevy or Dodge lot, as I hear they LOVE to get Tacoma's in. But maybe perhaps not since they have the Colorado to sell now.

I know right. But all and all, it was the cheapest decent truck I could find for sub $5K that didn't have 200K miles, or looked like it was a farm relic. Runs good so far, was a one owner, owned by older fella with religious maintenance history.

Makes nice V8 noises though after I altered the exhaust ;):D my neighbors however aren't happy about that.

After I get settled into the new job, I will probably get back into another '14 or '15 used in 2-3 years. I just need to drive this beater for a while then will be back in a Toyota again. If there is one redeeming quality, my back side isn't as sore driving the Ram for extended periods, as It is with the Tacoma.

Honestly if you are planning to get back into another Taco in a few years OP it doesn't make sense to sell it. Ditch the Dodge and run the tacoma for 300 thousand miles...

30k sounds pretty fair if you do sell. BUT

For a long distance commute unless you want to buy a corolla for mileage I think the tacoma is ideal because they run forever and high mileage doesn't kill their resale value as much as other vehicles. mileage isn't what kills these trucks, rust or abuse will. Putting that many daily miles on a 14 yr old Ram is going to wind up costing you more over a few years for repairs and maintenance than the depreciation on the Tacoma IMO. Sounds like a nice truck for 3000 but keep the tacoma and sell the ram for 4000. On the other hand if you need to free up the 30k in the meantime that's a different story.

^^ Exactly my line of thinking. Lots of guys pulling 250 - 300k + miles on the 1GR-FE and still going.

What you've already spent in sales tax on your Taco plus the 3k plus on the Dodge is close to 5k already and you've driven the Dodge for what, a week? IMO do yourself a favor.. you bought the Taco now drive the shit out of it for the next 8 years... at least. Unless you like being a statistic.

I don't quite understand the logic of selling the more reliable vehicle that you will depend on to drive for work. The Tacoma will hold its value regardless of mileage and it won't leave you sitting on the side of the road.

Have to agree with others here. You paid $34,500 for the Taco and drove 5700 miles so it is used now(no matter if if has been only a few months). The dealer has to make a profit. If they sold it to you new for 34,500 what would they get for it used? Them buying from you at 32K makes no sense at all. The 30k offer from Carmax is quite generous IMHO. I personally wouldn't pay 32k for it used either as a private party. Not enough of a discount(<10%) from new.

Vehicles are meant to be driven. Keep it maintained and you'll still get years of use out of it. Besides, you're only talking about 25k a year, not much at all.

Why not sell the Dodge and purchase a beater Honda vehicle for the same price and keep the Taco?

Op why would you a gas guzzler? Your tacoma gets better mileage than the.... I'm going to end here you obviously..... No that won't do..... So..... Ugh so much confusion. Why would you buy a tacoma and get a dodge? Seriously highway miles won't trash the truck. What trashes a truck is using and not taking care of it.... My goodness the logic here is so backwards.
