When is it too late to supercharge?

I have a 2008 with about 65k and could probably afford to supercharge it in about 6 months. I'm thinking my miles will be between 80-100k. I want the supercharger, don't need it but really want it. What are your thoughts?

Are you happy with it? What type of lackluster performance are you talking about? I spent a lot of time getting mods that would benefit from a supercharger.

I dont think you can put a timeframe on it. I'm sure theres motors out there with 100k on it that are in better shape than some with 60k.
If you're really worried, I suppose you could always do a compression check to give you a better idea of engine health.

Drag times? What were the times? More importantly, what were the trap speeds?

Ive been told they break in better with the motor but you should be fine for like 150k? they dont have much boost but you can always change that. I plan on boosting around 100k but im gonna rebuild for the long haul.

I installed on one my 3.4 1st gen at 80K w/ zero problems. Main issue with higher mileage motors and forced induction is injectors partially clogging over time from build up. Gadget at URD typically recommends a BG or Snap On full fuel system cleaning before installing a S/C on a higher mileage motor to avoid this issue.

So all that weight was between stock and the sc install? I know they say every 100lbs adds 1/10th of a second. More if its rotational weight, which the tires may have done.
Either way, i would've still expected it to be slightly faster as well :(

I was expecting some considerable gains especially since it's around a $6000 upgrade. My truck feels pretty fast right now, I have no complaints but I have always wanted a vehicle with forced induction.

I had the S/C installed with about 560 miles on the odometer. There shouldn't be any comparison between a stock, normally aspirated Tacoma and a properly-installed, supercharged Tacoma....the "before and after" scenario is quite impressive, even at a paltry 6 lbs of boost.

I put my s/c on at 1700 miles, so I can't really comment on the mileage question. I can tell you there is a huge difference according to the butt-dyno. Is it as fast as my STI was? No. But it goes better, hauls better, and sounds better. I recently replaced the stock dunlops with 6 ply bfgs. I did notice a slight difference in acceleration, as these tires are heavier. Just figure if each tire weighs 1 pound more than the one it replaces, it's the equivalent of throwing 24 pounds in the bed. So adding weight, changing things, regardless of opinion will vary results.

Wow something ain't right there on your truck. :(

I got the SC on mine a few months ago. It's quite a bit faster. I haven't done any 'racing/testing' but come on, a 28% increase in HP has to decrease the times.

To everyone who added a supercharger later, do you think it was worth the high price?

That's your decision, is 50ish/HP worth the 5K price tag? What is the extra HP needed for? If it isn't really needed and your itching to do a mod, put the money somewhere else.

I would have one already if I could afford it. ;)

I don't need the extra power but I want it. Right now, my truck is definitely not slow. I have done numerous mods and the truck feels great but I have always been modding all my vehicles but have never got to tinker with forced induction. So, that's where I stand. Have been modding since I was sixteen and have always been wanting F/I but never got it.

I'm in the same boat, been modding cars for a long time before I bought the Tacoma. The one thing I noticed when I went turbo on my car, everything needed upgrading. More power needs better brakes, extra wear on the transmission and drive shafts, more fuel, etc, etc...you just eventually upgrade items as they wear out or break. It was fun but so very expensive.

    Go for it man.

Lots of folks want it, but can't justify the 4K+ for it. It's all about analytics.

While $4000 for the hottest suspension upgrade is usually garnered with applause, getting blown for about the same price is ghastly to some. An S/C rebuild usually comes around the 100 to 120K odometer reading. It's all about how you drive, and isn't that usually important on an engine whether it's blown or not?

Simply checking the coolant level and the drive belt are usually all that's required for general maintenance on the TRD Supercharger. I think at about 10K is the time to verify the S/C lubricant is at it's proper level or you can simply refresh the lubricant as Delco makes the best S/C lubricant which can be found at any reputable auto parts store. I'd humbly suggest going to the Gates supercharger belt once the factory belt starts to show some wear.
There is a thread here that provides plenty of information for those that simply want something more. :burnrubber:
