Bought the truck I wanted tonight and I think I did alright on the price and trade. Took a lot of back and forth and saying I had better offers elsewhere, which was true, but I got them right about to where I wanted it. Thanks guys. :)

Looks good. Hope you have a fund set up for mods. :D See: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/technical-chat/1883-tacoma-mods-how-much-have-you-spent.html

Dealers have a quota or sales-based incentive system to meet, but it's usually end of the month. And dealers will always be more willing to negotiate on a truck that's been sitting on the lot, because they are paying interest on the vehicle while it sits. I did my negotiations about a week before month's end and handed over the bank draft on the 28th.

I ended up buying from a completely different dealership actually. I wasn't a huge fan of the service there, but ultimately I got what I wanted so good enough. :)

North Hills Toyota. The original dealership I was talking about was Diehl.

North Hills gave me a significantly better price on the phone, which then they said they couldn't do when I got there in person. We went back and forth on some things. Ultimately I told them what I could get it for from Diehl and had a target number a good bit less than that. They eventually conceded.

Diehl would have been closer to me and I would have just tried to work their price down more, but the truck at Diehl had something like 350 miles on it because it was a dealer trade. The truck I bought from North Hills had about 35 miles on it, so I wanted that one.

    Good work.

Similar situation happened with me. Greensburg was where I purchased from but Massie and Spitzer are closer... but they wouldn't deal.

Greensburg was lots of back and forth on phone with the actual sales manager... had him convinced I would travel to Maryland for their deal, since it was thousands less... so he matched it. He even called down there to confirm figures.

I actually had a similar situation. I had posted on another forum (not a Tacoma forum) about this. A sales manager from a Toyota dealership in NC sent me a private message asking for details so he could give me an idea of what I should be paying. He ended up seeming like he was trying to sell me a truck, but then he said he was going to write up a quote for me and I could either use it to buy a truck from him or use it as leverage to get a better deal up here. I went with the latter.

His price would have been better, but one I didn't want to get it from NC, and two he gave a high value to my trade that I can't say for sure if they'd have honored once they actually saw my truck. Not that it was in bad shape, but it did have a key mark down the side that I figured would really hurt the value.

    Whatever works. Good for you.

Car sales is nothing more than manipulation of the consumer. They play any card they can to get money out of the buyer.

Greenburg claims, "Tri-state price leader". So MD was threatening to them

It may have been stated, but you're dealing with the dealer 2 ways.

The price of the new truck and the value of the trade in.

If they give you a sweet deal on the trade in value, but jack up the price on the new truck you're not ahead anything.

If I were in that situation, the first thing I would do is walk in and ask about buying a new truck out right, negotiate a little on the price of the new truck and then throw in the trade in and work on that price. If they have a used lot associated with the dealership like my dealer did, they will vacuum it out and throw a tall price on it anyway.

I've never done trade in, so this is all opinion and I could be way off base.

I always leave it up in the air, "not sure about trade-in, not looking to get rid of it right now... maybe you can convince me otherwise"

    ...make them work for it

They do play it that way. The first dealership gave me a higher value for my trade but kept the price of the new truck higher. The one I bought from valued the trade $1k lower but gave a better price for the new truck.

But ultimately it doesn't matter to me much. What I cared about was the bottom line; after I give them my old truck, what do I owe them. That was the number I was focused on and that's the number I worked toward.

In all honesty, those of you who say it's "a game" to the dealerships are wrong. I am a salesman at a high volume Toyota dealership and I'm amazed by all the super mooches out there trying to haggle us over a couple hundred $$. I work on 100% commission and have bills to pay like everybody else. Toyotas don't have much margin and everybody on here knows that. Keep in mind that this is a business transaction and you should not be shocked when we want to try to make money! I'm sure everyone thinks car salesman make so much money ripping everyone's head off but that's not the case. Quit playing games with the dealer and be satisfied with a "fair" deal for both parties! I sell more Tacoma's than anybody else at my dealership and many i make a little money on because i know they are worth the price... It's called value ;) Go buy a Chevy or Dodge if you want to buy a discount rather than a truck. Sorry for the rant but i get tired of the constant trash talking on salesman and dealerships.

    Hahaha...

    1. I don't care about your salary structure and "bills" (go elsewhere if you're not meeting your needs)
    2. Being "satisified" with paying more then needed?... that will never be "fair"

I don't care if you care, that's the problem with people like you. I'm not playing games with a customer who says give me your best price. If i already know I'm going to make minimum commission on somebody who doesn't care who they buy their vehicle from over pennies go buy it somewhere else but don't give us a bad name.

Exactly, that's what I was getting at.

What's your truck worth? How much are they going to do to it before it's sold?

What's the new truck really worth.

I swear by Consumer Reports. We paid for the 3 month membership to see what dealerships actually pay for the trucks and the options. So I went in there and said "I know, you paid $XX.XX for that truck and I'll give you $200 more"

The truck was ordered in, got off the Trailer and I got in it. They didn't have to change oil, wash it, nothing. I knew what I wanted, all the guy had to do was file the papers, easy $200 for him.

What's measurable, that you're providing to your customers, better than the neighboring dealer?
