Looks like snow in Dallas tomorrow. I'm totally psyched.

Ice can really wreck the road conditions quick. A lot quicker than snow. Personally, I'd take 18 inches of unplowed snow over a bit of ice, snow actually has traction. Not to mention when people see snow they get scared and stay in, but when they see ice they think their Prius can do the same speed as dry pavement causing pile ups

    Tires, tires, tires.

A studded snow tire is made for ice, but even a studless snow tire will help some. It's still slick, but not nearly as bad as if you were running A/Ts or all seasons on it.

But, I suppose down south if you asked for a snow tire they would laugh at you.

The only thing that really works at all on ice is chains! Or carbides on a snow mobile.

Nope, not true. Studs are excellent on ice. If there is too much snow for the studs to get a grip on the ice, then I'd prefer chains. But studs are indeed very effective on bare ice - or even hard packed snow. There are some drawbacks to studs though. One, they tear the shit out of dry pavement. I think there's something like $40 million in road damage annually in the state of Oregon alone. Also, unless you want to continually wear down your studs, you'd have to switch tires over when roads are clear. Not many do that where there are serious winters.

I agree 100%. Studs do pretty well on ice.

Even a soft snow tire, though, will do much better than an all season or all terrain.

Damn , you gotta be kidding - that's just a typical day here from the frost we get . Our snow has melted down a bit , dog still having a hard time finding a place to squat without falling through the crust - getting a bit tired of that , he's trained just to do his biz and get back in here ...lol . If I can see across the street at all , we have school - no excuses allowed .
I'm ready for spring for sure , btw - getting too old for this crap cold .

^This. Winter tires are a softer rubber, increasing the grip. There are other factors that make a good winter tire, but softer rubber is one of them.

So far today we've had rain, sleet, snow, and now sun. Pretty typical day for Dallas...not!

Like how Kentucky got a foot of snow and nobody could buy a shovel.

I once heard a saying "you know you're from new england if there is a scraper in your car year round"

I agree with that too but if you want to stop on glare ice and get moving again chains can't be beat. They are a pain you can't go fast and they are noisy I have a 4X4 diesel tractor and with out chains on the back this winter I would have been in deep trouble like 6' deep. Even guys up here with 1 ton dual wheels that push snow for a living have chains on the back it costs them too much money to have some one pull them out..

Years ago I had a VW bug and that was a tool you kept right next to you in the car to scrape the ice off the inside of the glass!

A good excuse to take off work.

    Just sayin..... :D

That never works for me. Actually....when it snows really bad here and majority of the workforce stays home... The office is pretty damn peaceful and I love it that way!! They think I'm crazy for going to work on those days. LOL

Yesterday they called it a state of emergency, it was sooo nice driving around. Schools closed and parents stayed home. Without all traffic we got all our normal stops done in half the time.
Btw we did get snow in our area sometime after 5pm, no ice though.
