09 Tacoma auto shifting really late into 2nd gear...normal?

Just got my 09 Tacoma DCSB with the V6 and it's such a pleasure to drive, but is it normal for it to shift into 2nd gear really late? I notice it whenever I'm coming out of a turn the most. It's like I go into a turn quick enough to still be in 2nd but the truck downshifts to first then revs up really high and makes a very abrupt hard shift into 2nd. Drives me nuts because it's very annoying and happens all the time. I drive it like a grandma so I'm not giving it any reason to be late shifting. Also, no, i'm not in the 4 mode. I have it in the overdrive mode.

Mine does the same thing my wife says its because i baby it and it wants to be driven not put putted.

You are not alone - here's one previous thread on it. I've yet to see a post from an 09' owner who says theirs DOES NOT do that. Going in for my first oil change next week - I'll ask about it and report back.

Mines an '08 that does it. Kind of annoying sometimes, and its only from 1st to 2nd.

 

MY 2009 lags from 2nd to 3rd. There is one particular spot where I turn onto a road with a slight downhill. As I accelerate, it hangs on 2nd gear until the revs begin sounding raspy. I press the gas down and it accelerates but doesn't shift. Finally, when I let off the gas, the engine brakes briefly, then it shifts. Does it every time.

I should film it...the sound it makes is embarrassing.


As I've posted several times before, I also HATE the downhill downshifting. COAST ALREADY DAMMIT!!!

 

I had an 2003 tacoma that did the same thing till it warmed up - My new 2008 revs high when first leaving in the morning and then shifs hard into second - I guess that I am use to it as I beat the crap out of my '03 and at 180,000 miles, she still handled like a dream!

 

Mine does the same thing. I just took mine in for the 5,000 mile service, and asked about another other transmission related problems I was experiencing. I was told that there was no way to adjust the shift points, and nothing they could do. The computer "learns" your driving style and adjusts accordingly.

Whatever...

 

The computer just does that becuase it thinks that is a good gear to stay in until you press the skinny peddle more

 

I wouldn't know, I keep trying to get it to shift at 6k, but it won't let me. Every time.

 

I've noticed it the odd time, but it's not consistent. I think it probably just happens when you have a certain combination of throttle position, RPM's, speed, etc. I seem to notice it more when I'm accelerating while still in a slow tight turn. Usually if I'm already through the turn when I accelerate I don't notice it at all. This is just based on my recolection though.

As an aside, I'm loving the engine braking. It will be great for when the boat is behind the truck and I'm going downhill. It should help save the brakes for sure.

 

My 09 does it, too. Has to be the way Toyota has the shift logic programmed into the computer. I've never had an auto tranny behave like this and it could use to be tweaked to hold onto 2nd a little longer at low speeds under light throttle positions. I'll be keeping my eyes open in case this becomes a TSB or something but I am starting to get used to it.

 

they all do the same thing. I am getting used to it but it seriously annoys me.

if they could make a ecu chip that would correct this I'D be all over it (they make them for every sports car out there)

 

I noticed that if I have a super delicate touch on the gas when coming out of a turn it doesn't seem to do it. Maybe some others can try and see if they notice the same thing. I mean REALLY light on the gas.

 

I have the exact same issue and it drives me nuts. I spoke to the service manager when I dropped the truck off to get the TSB leafs done and he said this is normal and nothing can be done.

 

I was just cruising some old threads and I know that this has probably been addressed but do any of your trucks with this condition have an ECT power switch ? If so turn it off & see if it makes a difference after driving it around a bit.
