so i got a 2010 DCLB tacoma. it has 76000 miles on it. I just did and oil change with 5w30 synthetic Mobil1, and after i did the oil change. a week later i started to hear ticking from under the hood. which is a constant ticking sound, and then under the truck i hear a deep knocking noise. can someone please help me fix this issue. ill try and upload the video so you guys can see what im talking about. THANKS TACO FAM!

heres the link to the YouTube clip, it wont let me upload here for some reason.

Kinda sounds like an exhaust leak.

Well....it would be along the exhaust system. I cant tell from your vid. Shouldn't be too bad to fix. However, I would try DoorDings idea first. Go back the the other oil, and see if anything changes.

the thing is, i recently purchased this truck not to long ago. and i looked through owners log and couldnt find anywhere what the previous owner used for his oil. so i looked around on forums and they said mobil1 synthetic is my best bet.

You put in the correct amount, right? And used the correct weight?

yeah i used 5w30 mobil 1 synthetic oil. the ticking sound underneath my hood, i just got done reading that, that sound nearly ever tacoma owner has. but the knocking sound under the truck i haven't heard or read that, thats normal. but i will take it in first thing tomorrow. hopefully there is no charge for just checking it out.

thats not the normally talked about tacoma tick. Sounds like valves to me. The knock could be any number of things including, but not guaranteed to be, rod or main bearing. The whining could be power steering pump, alternator, or oil pump. This is all just armchair mechanics though as cell phone videos can pick up certain things, miss others, and distort the rest. Did you at any time start the truck while there was no oil in it?

no i didn't start the truck while there was no oil. the only time i started it, was when i got done doing the oil change. started it up for a couple mins so the oil can run through the truck. its hard not knowing much about vehicles, because if it is power steering pump, alternator or oil pump. i dont even know where to begin. kind of on a tight budget if i were to take it in to a dealership for something i can hopefully do my self and save money rather then take it to a dealership and spend alot of money.

Well the steering pump is fairly easy to diagnose. First make sure there is fluid in it. Then while running turn the wheel one way, then the other. The whine will change pitch if it is the pump.

The big concern is the knock. You could get more help if you can identify it's location. Take a stethoscope, large screwdriver, long extension, or even a broom handle. Put one end against solid metal on the engine and your ear on the other end. Keep moving it to new spots on the engine until you find a spot where the noise is the loudest. This will also work for the power steering pump, alternator, A/C compressor, water pump, etc. Be VERY CAREFUL around running engines though. Make sure you know what is moving, and NEVER reach in blindly.

If all else fails you can shoot Speed Freek a message. He is a tech in north county who does a lot of work on people's vehicles. He is a cool guy and will work with you.
