    I have a stock 2012 SR5 access cab with a 4 cylinder automatic.

I want to add larger tires nothing crazy just to give it a better look. Yet have read here that putting bigger tires on will severely hinder the performance.

That said I currently have 245/75/16's and ask how much bigger a tire I can put on before I will start noticing a diminished performance.

    I was looking at putting either a 265/70/16 or a 265/75/16

Any comments would be greatly appreciated!

If you can stay away from an LT tire in those sizes that will be your best bet as heavy tires are what will kill your mileage. If your are not going to be going off road get something with a highway/street tread.

Anything bigger than a 265 and you will have to lift the truck to fit. I have 275's on mine and had to do a 3" lift to fit

    Thank you for the feedback.

Hartford: I am curious if you mean putting on a MT style tire will diminish MPG or acceleration performance?

I like the look of the MT and in a 265/70/16 with a 2" larger diameter than my current 245/75's will have a great look! just don't want to kill my performance.

Magnetic Taco: With 2" more you think I will still be okay with the 265's in my stock truck?

In the end just looking for a good look for the truck thanks.

:DYou will prob be ok with the 265's. Will have to take the front mud flaps off though. And if you rub a little at full turn might need a bit of trimming but nothing major. I would just do the lift and go with some 33's

Stick with a P rated tire and a less aggressive tread pattern to save your MPG.

If it was me, I would stick with a 265/70/16 (30.6"). I would worry about to much tire for your engine and transmission. The 4cyl+auto is a little down on power.

I recommend michelin ms2 or Hankook dynapro rf10 or cooper at3. Ms2 is the best highway, the other two are AT.

If you run bigger than 265/70 (example 285/75r16 which is common) you will have to re-gear to get back into the power band of the engine. In my 92 (22re) 4cyl engine I had to run 4.88's to run 35"s, 4.56's for the 33"s. I would imagine it is much the same with the tacomas. Not that it can't be done without a re-gear, it is just really hard on the tranny and engine without it.

Thank you for the feed back. I am willing to lose some MPG yet do worry about getting too much tire for the truck which would just slow my acceleration down.

I like the look of an off road tire and being in the southtowns of Buffalo NY I like to have some bite from my tires in the winter months.
I currently have some worn Dunlop Grandtrek AT20's and was looking at the 265/70/16 BF goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2
In the end being a 4 cyl. auto I wonder if anyone has put the next size on and regretted it.

Well you wont know until you try. I would say go for what you want and expect that at some point you will have to re-gear. The KO2's are supposed to be a smooth running tire and shouldn't zapp all of your HP, You WILL lose some acceleration but again as long as you expect it no big deal....If you don't have to swap out your gears and you are fine with your power delivery then you came out ahead. If you do end up having to then no biggie you were already expecting to.
