This thread is filled with some of the most specious reasoning I've ever seen.

I wonder how many spin 5200 revs to milk out that vital 3 extra hp....
3hp+/- is inside of tolerance from the factory.
I bet (really) that if you dyno'd 30 tacos, 30% would be under 235hp using whatever fuel you wanted.
This is kids blowing $ to stroke their ego.

    Yea, it does smell good!

I use 91 it just runs so much cleaner. I used to put 87 when i first got my truck just cause it was cheaper. I could tell a small difference.

I tried about 5 gallons of 110 mixed with 91 not to long ago, because my buddy need some regular gas for his trailer and he was out so he asked if i had some regular and he gave me 5 gals. of 110. Truck ran pretty smooth, but im not gonna shell out 80 for 5 gallons. Imagine filling a tank with that, Insane!

    Too few to list.
My usual mileage for 87 octane is around 285
My mileage for 91 octane is about 325

Both from full tanks until the light goes on. About 17.5 Gallons.

I don't really care about the extra 3 hp. It wouldn't even be noticeable. That being said, it is a truck and what I do like is the fact that the peak torque is roughly 5% better AND it comes at a lower RPM. 87 gives 266 lb ft at 4,000 whereas 91 gives 278 lb ft at 3,700. To me, that makes the small price difference worthwhile (even more so when you add in the other benefits that people have mentioned).

Nice to see some other people using 91, since that's the highest octane that my area has. :p I do get better mileage with it vs. the 87 low-test.

First month of ownership... This month I'm removing front air dam, and also Rhino lining the bed.
OK, since I'm kind of a math nerd I like this stuff.. it graphs out such that you can compare them easily.

VARIABLE A-- the difference in MPG you realize in your driving situation between 87 and 91 octane.

In my case I have noticed that in driving a 1000 mile round-trip on 87 octane fuel I get 16mpg average for the overall trip. And, doing the same trip again using 91 octane fuel I get 18mpg average for the overall trip. The takeaway here is not the actual MPG, but the difference between the two. For me I get a 2mpg increase by using 91 octane fuel. **BTW I noticed that it takes two to three tanks on the new fuel for the engine to adjust and begin giving you the better mpg. So, best to do some interim driving on the new fuel before taking the second trip..

VARIABLE B-- the cost difference in the fuel prices between 87 and 91 octane.

OK, so in my case 91 octane costs $0.25 a gallon more at the pump right now.

NOTE: As the price of fuel changes and/or the average MPG change for you then one or the other octane fuels may be a better choice.

For my situation as described above I end up spending $5.00 less for every 1000 miles driven by using the more expensive 91 octane fuel. YES, that is correct that buying "super unleaded" (as it is branded out here) saves me money.

Of course, depending on the values you have for A and B above your results may differ.

    Good post, Dwight!
I did a similar test, and found the same/similar result. I end up saving about $1.00 to $2.00 a tank, depending on price and mpg.

    How so?

You do the calculations and find an improvement in gas mileage.

You pay attention to your truck and find better performance.

In my case you run a truck for 188,000 miles on Chevron 91 and never have a fuel injector service.

    I don't buy the argument....too many variables.
Wind, load, traffic speed, terrain, temperature.
No way...If you showed me controlled environment and some empirical evidence, I might be swayed.
BTW, a bottle of Techroline twice a year gives me the same reliability.

Except that 3 people for sure have gotten the same results doing the same experiment.

I got 590kms on 87 and 630kms on 91. Chris4x4 and mountainwolfpup got the same 'cept in imperial.

The thinkingman is a skeptic – nothing wrong with that.

Of course the conventional wisdom as espoused by the main stream media is that running anything other than regular is a waste of money. I’ve never seen a piece that said otherwise.

It sounds like you have not done a test yourself so you’re just spouting the conventional wisdom.

In this case you are not being skeptical.

The Chevron station near me that I usually fill up at has 86, 88, and 90. I always fill up with 88, since manual says 87 recommended in ordinary driving. What I'd like to find out is whether 87 is even available in Albuquerque at any of the stations...

Last weekend I took my 07 Jeep on a trip, and on the way back I filled up with 87 'cause I cheaped out on one tankful just because the Chevron station I stopped at thought their gas was liquid gold. Long story short, the Jeep ran better on the 87 from there than the 88 I've been using from my neighborhood Chevron...

My Taco runs fine on the 88, that's all I've ever used, but I'd like to try to find some 87 to try, and also 89, just for grins...

Are octane ratings pretty much the same statewide, or is it up to the individual stations?

for the most part, Gasoline can be different from station to station. Well.....The gas is the same, but the addatives are different. The Federal Government requires that stations use a min. amount of addatives in the fuel. Some stations use the min., some use more, and some have thier own.....That may be what is causeing the difference? I know that in my truck, Texaco, Mobil, and Cheveron, give less ecconomy and performance, while QT, Diamond Shamrock, give the best.

i was talking to some guys in california who get some vp 110 octane racing fuel and go have some fun every once in a while. The said you can definitely tell the difference.

I put my first tank of 93 octane in the other day bc I went to a drag strip. I can't tell any difference but maybe the mpg's will

Also I get 2mpg better with shell than the other low quality gasolines around where I live. we don't have to many chevron or mobile one's around here but I bet similar result would be shown. That 2mpg extra was both with my old '96 chevy s10 4cyl and my new '04 tacoma v6
