U.S. Ends Brake-Line Rust Probe, Urges People to Wash Vehicles

If you live where salt is used to clear the roads of snow and ice, U.S. safety regulators have a message for you: Wash the underside of your car.
The message came Wednesday from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which closed a five-year investigation into rusting pipes that carry brake fluid in about 5 million older Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC pickups and SUVs, without seeking a recall.
Instead, the agency blamed the problem on rust caused by road salt and a lack of washing. It determined that it was not the result of a manufacturing or design defect.
The agency urged people in 20 cold-weather states and Washington, D.C., to get their car and truck undercarriages washed several times during and after the winter, and to get their brake lines inspected for rust and replace them if necessary. The warning underscores the importance of washing highly corrosive salt from beneath a car because over time, it can cause suspension parts, the frame, or other components to corrode and fail.
NHTSA's finding that the GM trucks weren't defective came even though it received 3,645 complaints of brake pipe rust in the General Motors vehicles from the 1999 to 2007 model years, including 107 crash reports and 40 reports of injuries. Seventy-five percent of the complaints came from trucks in the first four model years covered by the investigation, 1999-2003, the agency said.
Investigators checked similar vehicles in Pennsylvania, surveyed owners in Ohio, and did random checks in other salt-belt states to determine that the same problem exists in just about every other vehicle from the same era because brake lines were all made of the same steel materials with aluminum coatings. The industry gradually switched to nylon or plastic-coated steel lines in the mid-2000s, NHTSA said.
The investigation started after NHTSA received a complaint from a Middletown, Ohio, man in March of 2010, who said the pipes that carry brake fluid on his 2003 Chevy Silverado rusted and leaked, causing a sudden reduction in braking power.
Yet it took until Wednesday for the agency to resolve the matter. The agency acknowledged that the probe took too long and said its Office of Defects Investigation is understaffed. Additional staffing and funding are in the Obama administration's proposed budget, NHTSA said. The agency said that in recent years it also has concentrated on more serious recall issues that involved multiple crash deaths.
NHTSA's car-wash advisory applies mainly to owners of vehicles from the 2007 model year or older in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.

I see this as trying to convince people that this is somehow their fault that manufacturers are cheaping out on materials that won't last as long & plastic covers what is going on underneath to the point of failures because out of sight is usually out of mind.....all so manufacturers can save money on parts. Cheaper DOES = reduced performance and longevity. Lines not covered in plastic will display visual problem for those who even bother to look underneath their car. Most people never even open their hoods but now are expected to lay down on ground and look under their car for something they have no clue about what they are looking at? Fuckin rich shit there. Feds are fed (paid off) by car maker's lobbyists so sure, they'll cover for them. Just like everything else nowadays, responsibility for product maker's shortcuts fall on the consumer for whatever excuse fits the circumstance. How about testing cars in salt prone areas and building them to that standard where they will fine for everyone instead of testing without consideration for salt corrosion and expecting those to hold up where salt is used like they would anywhere else? How about cars in those areas be required by law to come sprayed underneath to compensate for severe climate? Just stupid thoughtless bullshit cop out nonsense. People diligent about doing stuff to fight corrosion still have reduced lifespan of materials in those climates so WTF? It's such a lame world anymore..................

Reckon what that "5 year probe" cost the taxpayers?

But hey, the car companies are not at fault. They got the vehicles through the 12/12 warranty period, so what else should the consumers expect for $30,000?

Gotta use liquid nitrogen, it doesn't freeze until -300 degrees.

Guess people up north didn't air up their tires and get tuneups - it's not just for better MPG and less dependency on foreign oil, it also keeps the salt molecules from bonding to metal surfaces................:p

Funny, took them 5 years to figure out that salt causes rust, lol. My '03 Silverado lost its brakes with about 20k miles on it. It was in mint condition, always maintained, and hardly ever driven in bad weather. If all vehicles have the same problem, why do companies like "Inline Tube", who specialize in "old/classic" cars, sell more '99-'06 Full-size GM "kits" than almost any other product they make?? The way GM handled this brake-line "fiasco" is why I drive a Toyota today...:D

Under the truck, where about 6 lines connect to the abs module. But mine didn't even rot out there first. Mine rotted where the lines were routed between the body & frame, where you couldn't even see them. Fortunately, I wasn't moving too fast when I lost my brakes..."F-U GM"

Hum, it was probably the Democrats that brought it to their attention and the Republicans letting corporate off.

You don't think it was a bone head ideal of GM to put the ABS motor and piping under the truck? How come all of the lines don't rot out on every thing if washing it doesn't happen?
