I was thinking about powder coating my stock 17' alloy wheels black... Is this a bad idea? Anyone do this yet, have any advise, or know any good reliable spots in so cal? Thanks in advance for your help!

I had a set of Tundra wheels powder coated. They came out great. It's supposed to be a much stronger finish than paint. The only problem is that they won't be able to powder coat your center caps. You will have to hit those with a spray can. I initially had a problem coming up with a good match for the color of my wheels from a spray can (DupliColor), but if you're going with black, it should be an easy color match.

Mine are powder coated. 90% of people think they're derped.... I purchased mine off of eBay already done. The seller does a core exchange for your original unpowder coated wheels. I kept mine though..ed1f414e43fff88d3d297b68f8d9d66d_665caf554f08078adf3a5a76cab6074e2f021e53.jpg758b787e0e86915f10d82dd9747df0b8_4c363b2cc0299a2dfe7988f44d409fe8cd611a2e.jpg

On my Hyundai the tire shop that I bought my winters at, scratched the paint on my stock alloys. They ended up giving me new rims for free and I took my stocks to get powder coated. The finish is much more scratch resistant and they don't bake them at a high enough temperature to compromise the alloy or anything... Just make sure, as with anything else, that the shop is reputable and don't do a matte finish like I did.

The powdercoat process can take a week or more to prep and paint the wheels. Unless you have another daily driver, I'd reccomend trying to find a set off Craigslist and get those powdercoated. Then when they're done swap em out and put your set on craigslist so your truck isn't on blocks for a week

That's what I did. I found a set that had the paint peeling, and some corrosion for like $100-$150 for the set.

If you do go that route, bring them by a tire shop, and have them throw the wheels on a balancer, and make sure you don't have an effed up wheel, before you drop the money for the powder coat on them.

Thanks buddy! My friend actually is pushing me to Plasti Dip my rims now because it's temporary and it will actually protect the rims from any minor nicks. That way i can save up for some legit rims. He said buying stock Toyota rims to powder coat, or use while I'm in the powder coating process, is a waste of money. I might as well just buy new rims.

I'm just a little iffy because it was very tedious to plasti dip my badges.

It all depends on what your looking for. If your ultimately going to buy aftermarket wheels anyway, than it would be a waste of money.

I bought the used wheels, re-finished them, and then sold my stock set for $300 on Craigslist. Between the cost of the used wheels, and the powdercoating, it came out to ~$600. In my case, I just don't really like any of the aftermarket wheels I've seen so far. Many of them are also pretty heavy.

If you are going to just buy aftermarket, you should probably just leave your stock wheels as they are.

got a link or contact for this guy? I was going to buy new rims instead of pay for powder coating but with a core exchange it may be worth it.

Unfortunately the seller I purchased mine from no longer sells on eBay.
