Does a hard folding tonneau with these features exist?

I'm trying to locate the "just right" hard folding tonneau for my 2009 DBL Cab, short bed.

    • Folding (duh) ;)
    • Locking
    • Section nearest cab folds open for quick access
    • Somewhat easily, completely removed (to allow for full bed use, not folded against rear window)
Any suggestions? I could trade off the front most section opening, in exchange for a model that is full removable.

Fold-a-cover meets all of those. however the last one i don't know how "easy" it is to take off completely though. i have a bakflip.

My tri-fold tonneau is a hard shell with a vinyl covering on it, its easily removed in less than a minute, and installs in about 1-2 minutes. The whole cover can be easily folded up to the front of the truck and snapped in place to allow for bigger things, still occupies one third of the front though. Its from Advance Accessories and it uses the factory bedrails to secure it.

I suppose you could set it up in reverse you could fold it up to the back if you wanted to. My tonneau is similar to the one in that post, except you don't have the trifold seams, and you don't have to install those rails to make it secure. It looks like one solid tonneau that doesn't fold when its installed.

Here's a pic, not much, but it can show you how it looks installed:

I have the Bakflip. Meets all of it except for the quick access panel.
Just FYI, the ones with the quick access panel near the cab won't fold all the way up. The Bakflip folds up against the cab when open giving nearly full access to the bed. Two poles will hold it up against the back if you want to drive with it open.

Doesn't completely blocking the back window violate some state laws?

    Probably not.

Example: Think of Uhauls, they don't have rear windows, you have to look out the mirrors. Or, think of a commercial version of the Dodge/Mercedes Sprinter that do not have side or rear windows in the compartment area.

As long as you have both side mirrors you'd be fine. Otherwise, cargo vans would be illegal.

For me, it's down to the Fold A Cover G4 Elite and the Bakflip G2

    Pros/Cons

    Backflip is really local :D
Backflip is a bit cheaper :D
Backflip does not offer the front panel access
Backflip dealer will add keylocks, looks factory :D
Backflip gives full access without removing :D
Fold a Cover 10% more expensive
Fold a Cover access panel :D
Fold a Cover factory locking :D
Fold a Cover Shipped from Midwest
Fold a Cover factory locking :D
Fold a Cover seems to get better feedback here :D

Both are somewhat easily removed, so that's a non issue.

I could have the Bakflip by the weekend, the Fold A Cover will likely be mid next week.

Tough call, I do like that Bakflip is local. If I have any issues, I can pop down to their headquarters.

I went with a Fold-a-Cover G4. Likely installed sometime next week or the following, depending on how our schedules mesh.

I did email Julian at Bakflip with a couple concerns, and his reply was a bit reassuring and genuine. But, I simply could not ignore the feedback from this community on both of their products as well as their ongoing customer service.

Also, one of their dealers in LA completely threw their product under the bus, and this person seemed very knowledgeable on folding tonneaus and Tacomas.

I toiled over this for a few days, one problem they also have is their web site dealer search is a joke and the Google API they are using is for another site (thus fails) The only way I found (easily) to see their product in action was to watch a stupid "music" video commercial. At least Fold A Cover has a large animated GIF file that demo's their product.

It's the little things, hopefully I'll be a happy Fold A Cover customer when it installed.

Installed today, very happy with the product. Silly mods make you want to drive more ;) unfortunately, I have a meeting tomorrow so I'll need to drive my other car. Can't take the truck out until Friday.

I also looked at the bak flip, and the extang, but after doing a whole lot of thinking the fold a cover g4 was for me the way to go. Go with your gut though, me I liked not having to cover up my back window (lose about eight inches of space with that panel down, The g4 locks, nothing ten mins and a crow bar can't get through, but theft is usually about time speed, the inconvience of breaking in for what could be nothing. It rained here for three days hard, the only leaking was down one of the tunnels in the bed. I thought that was pretty damn good, as I didn't add any of the after purchase seals

An Extang Tri-fold hard cover and the new Pop&Lock PL5300 tailgate lock should do the trick if you want a big locking bed.

I'll see if I can grab a few pics this weekend. I live in Camarillo, but work in Ventura. I had Tri County Line-X in Oxnard do the work. I could have bought elsewhere for $50-75 less, but I really liked these guys, very professional and knew their stuff. I paid $950 out the door.
