Hey everyone. I received a letter from the dealership that I bought my tacoma from today. It says that they are selling more tacomas than ever, and inventory is low. They knew I have a low mileage 06 tacoma (it was in for service recently), and offered to buy it back and give me a great deal on something else.

Is this a scam or something that happens normally?

I might take them up on the offer, thats why im asking.

It is a way for them to get you into the dealership so they can try to talk you into another newer truck.

I've gotten those letters at least once a month since I bought mine last May...

Well, I thought the same thing, but it does say in big bold letters and underlined that there is no purchase neccessary. Im gonna call them tomorrow and find out. I dont really wanna trade for anything, just wanna get rid of the truck and this is an easy way to do it.

I've gotten these before. They make more profit on used cars than new. If they pick up your car and put you in a new one, they are just making more money. If you want to dump it though, it might be an easy way out, but don't get lowballed.

i know this is a common notice, i dont think i got some super selection. I am saying it says no purchase necessary on the notice. Has anyone called about this before? Or do I have to buy a new vehicle for this crap.

Toyota JAPAN offered me 12000 dollars for my 1997 Tacoma w/ 120,000 miles if I bought another Toyota!!!
I don't think Toyota recalled the frames on 06 however so you had best look into it.

A couple of years ago every time I'd go into the dealership, a salesman would ask me if I wanted to sell my 2001 DC 4x4 SR5 TRD. It was low mileage and in great shape, with a camper, towing package, racks and a Truck Vault box for sporting gear. They said this model was in high demand.

All the more reason to never trade it in! After I bought my '09 I sold the '01 privately and got a great, but fair price. You'll ALWAYS do better selling yourself if you can handle the minor hassles.

Carmax, and some other "conventional" dealers buy vehicles outright. Problem is, they only give you approximately what you'd get if you traded the vehicle in, which is usually much less than the vehicle is worth-Otherwise, it wouldn't be profitable for them to do it...

    No scam....

The amount of money they'll give you for your truck is nothing compared to what they'll turn around and sell it for. They probably make more money on used cars than new ones.

news flash... this just in... car dealerships are not charities. They will not undertake any venture that does not improve their bottom line. The buyback letters were designed by psychologists to make you go to the dealership wanting to make a deal instead of just shopping increasing their advantage. Their secondary objective is to increase traffic as research shows that they sell a vehicle every X number of customers that walk through the door. If you increase X, regardless of reason, you increase sales. The third objective is to make you feel good about the brand you bought (your current vehicle is in demand!) to ensure that when and if you buy it will be another one from them. Pretty clever.
Can't believe people are still falling for this!?!
