Why is the inverter in the bed?

Why did Toyota put the inverter in the back right corner of the bed?

Why not inside the cab, or towards the front of the bed?

 

The inverter is in the cab under the console. The outlets are in the bed.

I would have loved to have an outlet in the console.....our Nitro has one and is perfect for plugging in a laptop to charge.

 

So you can use the elctric weed eater and blower with your windows rolled up.

 

I think they put it there so it is easy access when your tailgate is down like if your out camping or what not. Instead of climbing into the truck or reaching over the bed to plug something in.

Yup there you go! Now you can run power to anywhere. Even inside the truck. Just slide that little center window over and creep it through! Haha!!

 

Running an extension cord from the cab to wherever you need it makes more sense, not the other way around.

What are we supposed to do in a rain storm when our electronic gadgets need to be charged? Dry everything off and park under an overpass to charge them?

 

Honestly? Hope you got a hotel to stay dry in or go back home!

 

Hard to run a cut-off saw inside the cab... much easier on the tailgate

 

I'm actually fairly serious.

For work, I need to have a laptop working when I travel...which means I need a power source in the cab.

Having that plug in the cab would be awfully convenient.

EDIT: Dangit, you coulda just said there was a link to a stock inverter mod on the last page of that thread I linked! Takes a while to get through all 8 pages I just posted it because I remembered seeing it in the DIY sticky on TN, I've an SR5, I have no inverter, and not much need to install one myself.

 

They make aftermarket inverters you can plug into a cig outlet or jump off the battery or other steady power sources.
You can also find cig outlet adapators for most laptop power cables.

I'd rather have the outlet in back to run stuff for camp or working in remote locations then having it in the cab...Gotta run an extension thru a window or whatever-Which means the smoke/dust gets into the cab worse than normal.

 

Aftermarket inverters are a pain with the extra cords and then sometimes I forget to bring them, etc.

I understand the need to prevent smoke/dust from entering the cab, but let's be honest, 95% of us don't have that problem. You could always run an extension cord outside the vehicle and slam the door. I do that frequently with antenna coax and it rarely damages it.

I suspect because of the exterior plug and the need to run the engine, the inverter on most trucks rarely gets used...which begs the question, why pay extra money for it?

We use 2 laptops ,installed this while doing other mods and had the console apart. Works very well .Even in the rain !
