The fuel surrounding the pump cools it.
The external pumps have been lower pressure pumps. The in tank fuel pumps generally work at a higher pressure, and generate more heat.

Well now, that makes a lot of sense. but surely we should be able to run it till the light comes on at least without worry?

Could this be why the light comes on with four gallon left in the tank.

If I see that the truck hold 21 gal and I get 20mph I want to go 400 mile on a tank. but the light has me filling up at about 18 gal.

BTW I actually got 19.2 and 19.4 on my first two tanks.:D

I have a two cylinder penalty over you.:p
I was quite pleased with 19mpg. My colorado (5cyl-2wd) got 20mpg, so I am pleased.

Btw my driving is combined city - highway miles.

One of the reasons nehind the 4 gals left when the light comes on is also to not leave you stranded without gas. :)

i RARELY let either of my vehicles get much below a half of a tank

in my mind...its one of those "just in case" things i do...

because of me keeping at least a half a tank at all times...i tend to fill up more often...however this worked out great in my favor when gas first skyrocketed to like $5/gal last summer...i didnt have to run out and stand in line to buy fuel...i was already on F :)

i do the same thing in my patrol car...but this is more of a in case i get involved in a pursuit or something deal...just never know when someone is gonna take off on you...and itd be embarassing as all get out to have to break off a pursuit because i ran out of gas...
