2008 startup smoke

I've had my 08 taco for a week now and noticed that everytime i leave to go to work in the morning, my taco blows smoke on startup. Has this been happening to anyone else?
Greatly appreciate any info.

 

does it go away when it is warm? its that cold time of year most vehicals do it when it is cold outside. could just be that.

 

it only does it at initial startup and never does it again. It doesn't do it when engine is warm. I'm down here in Florida, doesn't really get cold.

 

I noticed that someone posted the same question a while back, I hope it is not a valve issue.

 

What color is the smoke

 

if it is blue its oil black is carbon. try and semll it does it smell like bunt oil?

 

couldn't really tell the color, could be white. I just noticed the smoke go by after starting it in the morning. I'm going to check out the color next time and let you guys know.

Im thinking even though you dont get cold in florida vs other parts of the country. Im thinking with the humidity and cooler temps at night its just steam/fog comming out the tail pipe. Every morning star the truck then go back and check the exhuast pipe if it doesnt smell like anything is burning then let it ride just steam.

 

I have the same thing on my truck. I put a piece of tracing paper on a piece of cardboard at an angle in front of the tailpipe. I started the engine, let it run for 5 seconds, and shut it off. Most of what I got on the paper was water/condensation. The rest was a few particles of carbon.

There was a bit of a fuel smell to it, but Toyotas notoriously run rich.

With the high moisture we get in the South (especially Florida), we get condensation inside the exhaust system. Think of it this way. When your engine cools down the metal parts are cooler than the ambient air. Therefore, water particles in the humid air will condensate on the metal much sooner than they will in the air. This allows excess water to collect in pipes.

This is to say nothing of the water that is in the exhaust itself that settles in the muffler and Catalytic Converter. That alone can be a high concetration of water.

Just for sure, go check your oil level. I've heard of vehicles coming off the factory-line dry. Hopefully this isn't the case for you.

If it's white steam (unlikely in florida) it'll dissipate rapidly (won't hang in the air).

If it's oil, (bluish white) it'll smell like oil.

If it's black, it's a rich mixture (you'll see build-up in the exhaust pipe also).

In any case I don't think it's at all normal to see oil smoke on a new vehicle. It may benefit you to report it to the dealership ASAP so it's on record.

I agree with Tsunami*22, get it on record with the dealer, and then get a copy of there report, a paper trail will be your only leverage if said dealer is not on the up & up.

I never thought that with only 300 miles I would have to take my truck in to have it serviced. I was hoping to do some mods to it but now, damn. I'll see.

 

I'm having the same issue on start-up and plan on bringing it to the dealer ASAP.

 

its just condensation most vehicles do it at start up. in the winter u see it even more on the road every car does it.

 

I have had the same issue, but only if I allow the the truck to sit for several days. Upon startup, the exhaust will emit blue/white smoke and I can smell burned oil. This truck will burn oil for a very short time, like a second or less, and then run like any other cold toyota. Currently, the morning temperatures here are in the twenties.

I checked the oil level, which was too high of course (600 dollar dealer prep). The truck has 1500 miles on the odometer now and I have not noticed the burned oil smell lately.

 

If my new truck starts to burn oil it will be driven into the dealer.....LITERALY...It sounds like steam..However, my dad has an old 91 nsx which he never drives, has like 3300 on it and it puffs BLUE at cold start which I feel is a valve seal issue form age or sitting so long between starts..Dont let anyone tell you blue smoke on start up is normal...However dont let a dealer wrench take a new engine apart...If this condition continues, insist on meeting your areas toyota service rep and demonstrate so its documented.....I repeat, get this condition documented if its puffing blue no matter what anyone tells you...Also get it documented that it was overfilled....(just my opinion) Good luck!!!!

 

Sounds like good advice from ellsworth..Now my 2 cents..when breaking in a new engine it is possible to be too easy on it(rings glazed)dont be afraid to take the RPMs up a bit and make the engine work,just dont,"PUNISH IT",...Hope these smoke issues are nothing serious wrong with your Tacomas.
