TRD Sport (2WD) off-roading?

I have been thinking of taking my truck off-roading, but I just wanted to hear opinions from you guys. Do you think I would be able to get through most off-roading without 4WD, and has any of you done it before? I have heard from a couple people that they have rarely needed the 4WD to get through areas, and have wanted me to get my truck a little dirty. Thanks in advance!

 

Yeah just make sure to put a little weight in the bed to have a better foot in the mud. But thats only for the thick and deep stuff

Entirely depends on the terrain and driving conditions.
Also remember, that LSD is going to screw you as soon as you lift a rear wheel. Making your truck, effectively, 1 wheel drive.

 

dont underestimate the prerunner! u can also trick the LSD to act like a locker by "brake standing" it

This actually works quite well.

 

You should be ok for light FR roads and such, but it's a good idea to have a 4x4 with you and some recovery gear 'in case.' I was amazed at the stuff I can do in my pre-runner, but it's also locked and I air down.

be sure to air down the tires and try to take the easiest route sometimes... and dont try to fish tail. its cool but ive been f*cked by doing this

 

also i dont really like mudding, i like to do the chalenging stuff like flexing and crawling

It's only the TRD Sports with the LSD to the best of my knowledge. I'm not sure exactly how it works, and I have a locker so... can't really say. I think if I remember right if you get one wheel up, you apply pressure to the brakes to cause resistance in the wheel in the air, which will trick the LSD into providing power to the one on the ground... something along those lines.

 

<---- wants to know what "break standing" is. I've definitely been stuck in mud on a few occasions but was always able to back out (due to gravity).

 

im pretty sure i have it...i have the button that can be turned off that looks like the car fish tailing and it says something about lsd off or sumtin

The LSD works as a torque multiplier. When torque is multiplied by a factor of 0 (a wheel is up in the air), your LSD basically becomes an open differential, leaving you stuck. If you pull (or press) the e-brake two or three notches, the wheel that is turning without resistance will now have resistance, allowing the LSD to multiply torque applied to the opposing wheel.

This same technique can be used by applying the brakes. This is easiest with an automatic, although most people find the e-brake easier with a manual trans.
