Things are blazing forward. The tubes are just tack-welded in for now, but I'm thrilled with the way it's coming out. My intention is to meet the SCORE safety requirements while keeping the truck comfy as a daily driver.

The roof sheet metal won't do diddly in the event of a rollover so there will be some overhead tubes when all is done. It'll also protect tall drivers (me) by keeping the protection even with the top of the main hoop. The angle tube on the passenger side is just to check clearance for now. The back part of the armrest will be trimmed to allow the bar to pass by.

View of the interior and cage from the passenger side. I'll be torching the foam padding from the floor and lining the floor and roof with roll-on bedliner to protect the metal and deaden road noise.

The 2" chromoly tubes pass through the side vent openings without any trimming. The glove compartment area will be trimmed to fit the downtube while still remaining functional.

Remarkably, the downtube on the driver's side does not interfere with my comfort or clutch operation. Those two are listed in my order of priority. ;)

There's still a lot left on the cage, but the most difficult tubes are now bent up and tacked in. This project just keeps growing!!

i wanted to do a cage/rack in the bed, but dont have the need or funds for a full-out cage throughout the truck

I'm curious to see how the truck feels after the cage is in place. Since everything is being tied directly into the frame, and we've boxed the frame where the rear downtubes attach, it should really stiffen everything up and remove any chassis flex.

After the cage is in I'll be tearing into the rest of the truck. The gas tank is already gone and will be replaced with a 50 gallon fuel cell in the bed. Dual batteries will be mounted at the rear of the bed alongside a dual spare-tire rack to improve weight distribution. The bumpers and suspension are being replaced as well.

The truck should be pretty capable when it's finished. I'm really looking forward to getting it back on (and off) the road. For some reason, cruising in a '95 Civic sedan just doesn't give the same satisfaction as the v6 Tacoma.

    Step it up!! :D

I'm actually going to run AllPro's full suspension w/bypass shocks front and rear. Class 7sx requires stock lower A-arms, so running a long-travel would put me into Class 7. I just don't have the pockets to run in Open Mini.

Both Camburg and Total Chaos make some sweet kits, but I'd lean towards the Camburg kit based on what they were able to do with their Ford Edge race vehicle.

Granted, they're not running their off-the-shelf system, but the performance of that vehicle demonstrates a heck of an understanding of suspension geometry and tuning.

I'm essentially building a street-legal rockcrawler to drive down to Mexico from NJ, run in the 2008 Baja 1000, and (if all goes well!) limp home. The biggest desert-specific upgrade to the AllPro system will be Light Racing's Jouce Shocks all around. Painfully expensive but worth it for the performance increase!

Any specific goals for your truck or do you just enjoy the hell out of it when you get the chance?

That looks good. If everything goes well for 2008 Baja some of us here from Texas might be going, maybe we could all meet up and help out some of the way?

I wanna keep the Tacoma the daily driver, but with the touch of show and go... The Silverado is the main project in the garage right now...
I'll get some more pics up soon...

i'm really interested to see how it turns out! my plans for mine were to put a 6" lift, 16x10 wheels with a bigger offset, 32" tires, roll the fenders or just buy wider ones, get a front bumper and a rack/roll bar in the bed that is tied to the frame in 6 spots, and gives me a light bar just above the cab. that's really all i wanna do to it other than a 4.7l v8 swap but again, the money thing comes into play, so unless somebody needs a kidney, as i have two, then it looks like this will take me awhile

i am going to eventually put in Sparco EVO2 front seats also, with a harness bar...the stock seats are great for being stock, but i like not being able to move at all when i sit in it

I think I just found a way to make this a Class 7 truck! :D

The rules for 7sx require that I keep the stock front bumper. I'll keep it, but it won't remain unmodified. If Total Chaos ever gets their site back online, check out the Tacoma PreRunner that they build for an idea of what I'll be doing with the front. It's another custom fabrication thing, but it'll be a requirement to survive the race.

You mentioned tying a light bar into the bed rollcage, and that's exactly what I'll be doing. My plan is to have the bar mounted with right-angle triangle plates with a bolt hole at each point. When mounted, the 90 degree angle will face forward and the bolt through that hole will be a pivot. The rear bolt will hold the light bar in place. In this way I'll be able to fold down the bar for daytime running (for the sake of mileage and to protect the $$$$ lights!) and keep it up only when needed. It's like Viagra for my truck.

I too am keeping the tires under 33". I don't want to start messing with gears, and the v6/6-speed should have no problem compensating for 31.5"-32" tall tires.

Sounds like you've got quite a build ahead of you as well. Post the progress!

Regardless of whether it's the site for it, post some info on that Chevy! Just from that picture I can see lots of rubber, fiberglass fenders, and some serious mods to the front end. The tires don't look overly aggressive so I'm going to guess you run sand with that beast. Am I close?

I'm gonna start a new thread and post some pics so I don't hijack this one...
It does see sand the most but the Baja T/A's haven't failed us yet in other conditions...

I'll get some pics up soon....

the stock tires are 30.5 on my taco, but all i want is a 32x12 with a wider offset to widen the stance a little. with tires any bigger than 33s, i dont see how you could safely get around a turn in the dirt sideways. too much sidewall and too aggressive of a tread design seems like it would catch in the turn and roll the truck over
