    Hello all,

I think I burned up one or both of my catalytic converters using a high-flow air intake. Due to the engine code, and the amount of black crap coming out of my exhaust, i'm pretty sure it's a cat. I cant find an aftermarket cat for an '05 tacoma v-6 4 liter anywhere online. Does anyone know any aftermarket cats that will fit (without tripping the check engine light)?

My registration is expired so any help is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance...
    Out.

I pulled the code awhile back, and to be honest i don't remember. left bank not operating to max efficiency-something like that. I had the K&N and the check engine tripped shortly after the install. I thought it was the mass airflow sensor, so I let it go for a LONG time. It's not the MAF, and I was kicking out a lot of black crap out of the exhaust, so i'm pretty sure its the cat.

Without the code, I cant be much help. The odds of it being the cat are slim. I woud try the O2 sensor first.

I'll try to get the code again tomorrow and see if that helps, I'd much rather replace an o2 sensor over a cat or two. I believe it is a cat because of all the black crud coming out of my exhaust that was stuck to the side of my truck. I't was like droplets of thick soot, and it went on for a few months then stopped (like the cat was damaged and eventually there wasn't anything left to come out).

CATs have a long warranty. If it is the CAT, it may be covered.

60,000 miles, but I installed the high flow air filter at around 30,000 (maybe less)and the check engine light came on shortly after. A friend that is a mechanic had a similar problem, and it turned out to be the mass air flow was coated in oil from the filter. I assumed I had the same issue and didn't worry about it.

If you think they'll give you beef for the intake, find someone with a stock intake to trade for the warranty work. Worth an hour or two's time imo.

If it is the CAT, you should put the OEM filter (if you still have it) and go to the dealer.

I pulled the K&N off months ago when I moved out of California and planned on registering it in the new state...I Thought if I put the OEM filter back on and cleaned the MAF the check engine light would go off, but it didn't. I think my warranty was 5 year 50k so it's no longer under warranty.

CATs have a warranty of 80k or 8 years. It may actually be longer

I got the codes today; P0420 BANK 1 and P0430 BANK 2. I replaced the mass air flow sensor and reset the computer. I've driven it about 70 miles and still no light, hopefully that does it. While driving it I noticed it sounded a little different, seemed to have more power, responded a little faster, and idled more smoothly. We'll see. Thanks
