That sucks. Sorry it didn't work out buddy. Mine wasn't that bad. Did you check if the clip from inside will work? I hope so unless you can find another way to improvise.

i think anything to put in there will hold it, if its even necessary, there are still the two bolts on the bottom, and i think that clip is the same size as the ones holding the bottom of the front bumper, and also around the grille and headlights.

So I can slide the bumper off without removing the hitch or the whole bracing to switch of my bumper cover but just removing the trailer hitch bolts under the caps and the center step pad then the back two bolts on the mounts underneath and the bumper will slide out?

I think someone mentioned this already, but I just replaced the outer bumper (just the metal "skin") on mine the other day. You can replace the outer portion without removing any of the large hitch/frame bolts.

It is a little painful because you have to release the 14 clips holding the upper plastic pad in place and you have to do this from underneath the vehicle, PIA because they are hard to access. If you do get this off then get the lower plastic pad off (two 10 mm bolts underneath and two push pins on top). You will find four 12 mm bolts on the top side of the cover and four on the bottom side.

I would say if you have a couple helpers it might be just as easy to go ahead remove the entire assembly as described in the OP.

Took off bumper to install a new Rocktek bumper. This thread was very helpful. As someone else experienced, one of the little pop-up bolts did not come up, so had to drill though. Otherwise, everything else went smooth. Thanks for posting the detailed steps and photos.

Use a prying tool. Harbor Freight specials work fine. Think blue plastic pieces that usually flex. They work great around the entire truck. Flat screw drivers are usually too thick.

I am working on a black rear bumper myself. I don't want to have my chrome blasted and painted cause I might want to put it back on someday or maybe sell it. Parts guy told me that part number 52151-04907 comes in kind of an argent grey color. I assumed it was primed black. Does anyone have a picture of this part so I can see the actual color? Is it primed or painted? Parts guy told me it's painted and ready to go. I am a little confused on this. Maybe you guys can help me out. Thanks!

It'd probably be cheaper to just get yours color matched. You could very easily swap someone (and get cash as well) a chrome bumper later on if you really wanted to, but it'd probably even make the truck easier to sell. As for that bumper, not sure but I'd presume it's the kinda flat/plasticy looking base model one, but I have no idea for sure.

Very helpful post and thank you guys for leading the way. I give everyone props for taking off their bumper and paint it now. Took alot longer than I thought it would take. Thought I was done when the bumper got off but the real battle for me was the plastic ends. I tore them off from frustration and will fabricate something on a later date. A few pictures for any future member who want to tackle their rear bumper.

    20160927_105534.jpg 20160927_112809.jpg

PM if you need alot more pictures. Didn't want to over due it. Yes, had to do whatever was necessary to get all those clips under the plastic off without them reattaching.
