what is the difference? I'm confused.

I'm interested in a double cab 4x4 TRD sport or offroad.

Is it a basic or a prerunner??

Sport wheels added.
the basic truck is just a 2wd and 5 lug wheels. The PreRunner is a 4X4 chassis but only 2WD and has 6 lugs.

No worries about either if you are looking at getting a 4X4.

X-runner is a nice access cab 2wd hotrod version of the Tacoma with 5 lug 18s and ground effect package. It's the sporty Tacoma if you will.

^^^not entirely true....There is a BASE truck that is 4x4 and 6 Lug..it is the Access Cab V6 or Double Cab without the TRD or SR5 packages...and it looks like this :D

Can Toyota get anymore confusing with all the packages and options .

But to the OP since you are going for a double cab 4x4 TRD..then you don't have to be concerned with the BASE or Prerunner models. Just another thing TRD packages come with SR5 package included. Or you can get a non TRD with the SR5 or a non trd/non sr5 and it still have the same stance, 4wd and 6 lugs wheels.

Base is where all 3 body styles start without any packages or options. From there you can add in to get the truck you want - or buy it off the lot ready to go which is usually cheaper as they're ready to deal to close a fast sale. TRD packages have comfort options and some other cool stuff.
