Looking for some details from members

I'm looking to buy a 05-06 tacoma extended cab but i'm not sure what features to get since I know there is so many packages to pick from. I know i'm going to get 4x2 unless I get a good deal on a 4x4, but the 4x4 gets worse MPG I believe.

Which year is better, 05 or 06? Why?

How come the auto gets 2 MPG better (when combined together?)

What MPG are you guys getting and how do you drive? Looking for people who our stock since my truck will remain mostly stock.

Going to be using it for carrying dirt bikes, a waverunner and everyday use.

 

i have an auto 09 dc short bed, and i get around 19 city stock, i have a heavy foot and i rev the engine alot and burnout but city driving around here is all divided highway with merging so theres little to no stoplights

 

05 have bad motor mounts/failing ones?

 

The newer the better - seems they ironed out some things since they first came out.

I have an 07 (produced in Nov 06 I think) and I consistantly get 18mpg (mix city/highway).I have an Auto Access cab 4.0L. I'm mostly stock....

Since you're buying used, you might have hard time finding exactly what you want.

 

What do the different packages offer? Do the 05 has motor mount problems?

 

The manual is geared differently so it's mileage isn't as good. It revs higher for a given speed than the auto. I was getting about 16mpg mixed and about 19 highway before adding the lift and the tires. Keeping the RPMs below 2000 (auto) will give you the best mileage.

 

There is a sticky about the 05's and the motor mounts failing in the 2nd gen Taco section.

 

I was getting 20.5 mpg in my auto v6 before the tires. Do yourself a favor and get a 4x4. You MAY never use it, but its piece of mind to have it. Personally If I wanted a 2wd, I'd buy a car, but to each his own.

Yeah it might be a good idea, but how much worse is the MPG?

 

It just depends on how you think you'll be using it mostly...
I've had 4x4's most of my life, but don't go offroad as much as I used to. Bought an 06' prerunner access cab long bed and I'm glad I made the choice on 4x2. It still does great on hunting trails and the ground clearance is same as the 4x4. I'm getting 22.5MPG on the highway and around 17-18 in the city.

 

Wow sounds like some pretty good mileage. I'm sure the 4x4 will get 2 mpg or worse?

 

4X4 seems to be about 1-2mpg difference, not much when you consider your needs. I am in the same boat as carmellocafe, offroad ability was not a major factor in my choice but I can still do what I need to.

 

I just filled up my 09 4x4 DC on my way down to work tonight and it took 15.2 gallons and went around 290 miles if i remember right, but what i do remember for sure is that I did the math and got 19.5mpg. I'm pretty happy with that.

 

Any other problems or issues with the 05-06?

 

That's rare for a 4X4. Look at (hundreds) of MPG threads and you'll see.
