how much more is 4x4 for new taco

What is the price difference for a 4x4? I'm guessing $3000?

Best $3000 i have ever spent

 

It's about $2K in CA but still on a $25K sticker that's a lot when you're on a really tight budget.

 

I agree with db67fm it is the best money I spent as well. I'd highly recommend 4x4

 

If you don't have it now, you'll wish you had it later.

What you miss with the 4x4 is twofold: comfort and operating economy. The 6 lug suspension that the 4x4 requires is much higher, stiffer and does not ride anywhere near as nicely as the 5 lug. The 4x4's everyday mileage will suffer by 10-20% or more compared to the 4 cylinder with the 5 lug.

I've had 3 Toyota 4x4s before and went with the 2wd '09 Access Cab with the electronic limited slip differential. It gets my boat up a slippery boat ramp and doesn't make every mile I drive pay for the few times I might need 4 wheel drive. When my 82 y/o father got in it for the first time he said with surprise, "This rides like a car!"

As an official old fart I went with the cheap and easy this time.

 

Get much snow down there in southern Florida?

 

My 09 Sport rides pretty darn good. I have no complains about it being high, stiff or even bad on gas. Much better then my 2wd f150. The few times I needed 4x4 I was very thankful and happy that I had it. Walking to work sucks when your vehicle is stuck in snow and can't get out of the driveway. It also got me in some great hunting and fishing spots without being stuff. I'd highly recommend 4x4 because if you ever need it you'll be happy you had it.

 

All depends on your needs. 4 wheel drive isn't critical for south Florida, for instance.

I took one look at my whitewater and skiing habits in the mountains of Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Idaho and realized I had two non-negotiable points due to the snow and forest service roads: stability control and 4x4.

The physics of the matter are impossible to ignore, though. Because there is more mass, it will take more energy to accelerate to identical velocities. That said, I get 18-22 mpg from my truck in the mountains, not driving softly and hauling hundreds of pounds of gear. I'm okay with it.

And sand; I've seen 2wd trucks buried to the frame on sugar sand two trails. And I've seen 4wd rusted out Trackers and old 4wd Toyota trucks on street tires bounce down the same roads without so much as a spin. That smelly, black, silty mud in the swamp areas is as slick as motor oil. I would think no matter where you live, if you spend much time in the boonies, off of paved roads, 4wd is worth the cost.

 

Point awarded! I took my truck with 1000 miles on it out on the Oregon Coast dunes with nothing more than 30s worth of air release from each tire. (I wasn't planning on going out there and didn't have a pressure gauge with me)
