21.6 mpg with Chevron 87 octane

I have been testing different fuel octane and different brands of fuel for my new truck. Surprisingly, today when refueled and did my usual calculation I got a 21.6 mpg!!!

This is actually higher than 21mpg estimated by toyota (not by much though, but I was still surprised)

I am using 87 octane chevron with techron... My taco is a 4L V6 4x2 PreRunner LB.

I think I have found what my taco likes to eat, hope it may help those who are experiencing with different fuels....

 

I found that lower grade fuel tends to burn slower/more mpg but gives horrible performance and response.

 

Jeez...I haven't even broken the 20mpg mark on my 4cyl. Been close at 19.6 mpg.

 

I just got 22 running Cumberland Farms (Gulf) 87 Octane in my 09 4x4 V6 auto.

 

I got 27.7 mpg with my 4 banger on chevron 93

Mine eats chevron up...but efficiently eats it

 

I found my 4.0L runs OK on 87 octane, but when the weather is really hot it will ping in traffic. I'd always used 91 octane but last week found myself ...ummm...short on cash, and bought the cheap stuff. It was up to 108F the past couple days.
Last time I'll ever do that in the summer folks. I'd never heard the Taco ping before now, but it was completely obvious. When this baby pings, you will hear it.

 

Lower grade fuel burns faster and easier. Higher octane = increased combustion resistance. And it gives more MPG and better response. I found that the biggest thing is tire pressure. I originally had my pressure to the max that the tire is allowed and I got wicked mpg. Then I dropped it down to what's on the door jam and I've lost massive mpg. I'm putting more air in my tires immediately. A little less in the rears because I'm noticing some cupping on the rears what with the little weight that's in the back of the truck versus the front.

 

ARCO is the shittiest gas ever created, its almost like a thrift gas. your getting 20 miles but you might wanna put some cleaner burning gas in there soon.

 

I have never tested different gas, I use 85 oct and only really use two gas stations one is a shell by my house the other is a diamond shamrock by my work and I get great MPG.

 

I just got 21.6mpg to my last tank on 87 with the AC running full blast in the Texas heat with my Double Cab 4x4.

 

I really wish I'd bought a V6. I'm lucky to get 21 mpg in my Access Cab 2.7 4x4. I'm trying 89 octane in my tank for the first time this week so I'll see if that helps.

 

man.....i dont know how you guys do it. i baby my tacoma on the highways compared to how i used to drive my car in order to save as much gas as possible and i still doubt I am anywhere near those numbers. i havent crunched the numbers yet, but I would guess its been around 16-18 mpg. i have run nothing but 87 octane so far.

 

The best I have gotten was 22.4MPG and 21.6MPG on 93 in West Texas hill country on I10 doing 80MPH.

 

I got 20.2 MPG at the most, 4.0 V6 ,DC SB Prerunner. Hwy : 75 mph avg
