I have only run 91 in my truck since the day i got it. The first two fillups were with 91 chevon gas, then I switched to 91 shell and really like it so i'm only putting shell in it from here on out.

I don't think the Octane will make that big of a difference in MPG.

But depending on your driving style it it may help.

I started with the 93, and after a few tanks I noticed that there was a heavy smell of gas from my exhaust. So I switched down to the 91.

(The smell of gas will tell you that your engine isn't burning the fuel completely. The lower octane will help to burn the fuel better.)

Your truck has ping sensors so it will adjust the firing to accommodate the lower octane (87) But the engine won't be as efficient as it should.

The trick is to find the lowest octane that doesn't make your engine compensate.(retard the timing) That way it will run at it's best, and burn the fuel completely.

I just got through doing my own 87 vs 93. For some reason all the stations in my area use 10% ethanol, even in 93!! Not sure about the shells, they're usually a lot more $/gal. But hess, 7-11, racetrac, mobil etc. all use 10% ethanol in all grades of fuel. So I've been running 87, tried 2 tanks of 93. No difference in MPG. I will say that maybe you get better throttled response/performance but for daily commuting 87 is fine. If I tow/haul some heavy weight I'll be using 93. So I was not able to justify the extra cost of 93 octane in my tacoma.

As for Pinging, Thats why I want a scantool so I can see ping counts and compare 87 vs 93 in more scientific light.

    93. I get 1-2 mpg better with 93 vs. 87.

I recently returned from a road trip from South Dakota. Reading through some of the posts on TW, many members found that they were getting better gas mileage with high octane gas. With a 3400 mile round trip I thought I would give it a try. According to my scangauge I averaged 18.9 mpg (80-85 mph with AC on). The majority of the miles were on the freeway. I am not sure if it is better than with regular, but decent mileage. One thing I noticed was the "lod"(load on the engine) number on my scangauge. At idle it is typically 28. With the high octane fuel it was 38 to 40. The last tank of gas I went back to regular 87 and the "lod" dropped back to 28.
Why would a higher octane fuel increase the load on the engine?

That's why 85 octane is our low grade, instead of 87.

BTW, why do we have yet another MPG thread/poll? This horse has been dead and beaten enough on this forum. A simple search on the word "octane" brings up 111 threads.

It's pure marketing. It's a filler. Nitrogen is intert, meaning it remains unchanged throughout the combustion process (for the most part).

    I tried 87 and 94 and didn't notice any difference in mileage/performance.

    I stick to 87.

Correct. In the combustion process of an internal combustion engine, there is already 78% NITROGEN content in the air/fuel mixture. Nitrogen is a temperature reducing dilutant. Nitrogen reduces combustion efficiency by absorbing heat from the combustion process. This recuces the heat availible for trasfer thru the heat exchange surfaces.....cylinder walls, piston, etc.. Lower temps lead to MORE carbon build up in the engine! It also increases the volume of combustion by products. At high temps., Nitrogen can combine with Oxygen to produce oxides of Nitrogen, which are toxic polutants. This being said, I find it ironic that some Fuel companies are actually marketing "Nitrogen enriched" fuels as a GOOD thing. Is the general public so un aware the air in front of their face is 78% Nitrogen?
