Correct. In the combustion process of an internal combustion engine, there is already 78% NITROGEN content in the air/fuel mixture. Nitrogen is a temperature reducing dilutant. Nitrogen reduces combustion efficiency by absorbing heat from the combustion process. This recuces the heat availible for trasfer thru the heat exchange surfaces.....cylinder walls, piston, etc.. Lower temps lead to MORE carbon build up in the engine! It also increases the volume of combustion by products. At high temps., Nitrogen can combine with Oxygen to produce oxides of Nitrogen, which are toxic polutants. This being said, I find it ironic that some Fuel companies are actually marketing "Nitrogen enriched" fuels as a GOOD thing. Is the general public so un aware the air in front of their face is 78% Nitrogen?

I've always used 92, but I have to now because of the s/c.

I use 87 and I get 21-23 mpg in a mix of city and highway.
Recently on a very empty tank, I used a fuel system cleaner and filled it up with 93 octane. I was on a long trip so it was a good test to look for mileage gains. I got 18 mpg with that tank. I filled it up with 87 again, and I am back at 21-23 mpg. Go figure.

2 points...1st - i use regular (87 in jersey) and seems to do fine. may try the sunoco 100 octane race fuel for shits n giggles, but we'll see. even for my ninja, i use regular...but its a parallel twin not inline 4. i do know that midgrade gas is useless. its better to use jus tsuper or just regular. no inbetweens. as my life experience has taught me.2nd - i see a lot of colorado residnets posting here. i am in co right now and do some wheelin with a bunch of people....if youguys are interested in coming along...they go every weekend and its great times. the even go to some 8-9 rated trails. but we only ride with people who practice trail etiquite and saftey, because we do not wanna haul anyone up fromthe bottom of a cliff or ledge. agian, great times if ur up for it. we even go wheelin with an H1 driven by a chick, its great watchin a 5 ton monster hit the trails. 1/4 steel plate along the entire bottom of the rig, STOCK!!!!

I wouldn't do this if I were you. The higher the octane of a fuel, the slower the combustion time, requiring more adavanced timing. What this means is that if you run race fuel in a "stock" engine, combustion may still be taking place as the exhaust valve opens raising exhaust temperatures. What's bad about higher exhaust temps? Your catalytic converters won't like overly high temps and will likely prematurely fail. As there is virtually no difference in specific energy between 87 and 100 octane, there is no gain to be made. Race fuels are made for engines with high compression ratios that run at high RPM because it allows for more advanced timing without detonating.

I've tried 87, 89, & 91. 87 definitely rendered the best MPG for me. Didn't see even the slightest difference in performance from higher octane. I'll be sticking with 87.

I use BP 93 or Shell V-Power (93) and am getting about 1.5mpg better than when I used 87. I have been tracking this for the last 7 tanks. It varies but this is an average increase.
I also experienced a noticeable increase in throttle response. I like to get going quick after stops and I noticed a performance increase when I started using 93. I would use 91 but we only have 93 around here.

Unless you're tuning for higher octane gas it's kind of a waste of money to put in anything higher than recommended. 87 is recommended so that's what the engine is going to know how to run best on. It's really not going to know what to do with the higher octane.

Gotcha. I'll read once I take delivery haha. But generally speaking with the vehicles I've had experience with you'll gain nothing from going higher than the recommended fuel if you're not tuned for that.

Well, as you know Chris, Toyo states "research number 91" regarding octane for the 1GR-FE...I'm assuming this means they pulled the rating numbers off of testing done with 91 octane...

I agree, but here's the thing: The Taco V6 is tuned for 91.

what i dotn get is how can it be tuned for 91, if some states do not even pump 91 due to elevation....is there hard evidence to prove this...a document or something....i would like to see it....hopefully it exists
