rims

i've had the same mechanic/friend working on my vehicles for some 25 yrs now.i trust his judgement.when my wifes 00 tacoma was recalled i had just lifted it 2 1/2 inches and bought a sweet set of tires and rims for it.toyota let me keep the tires and rims off it as long as i replaced them with her old stock alloys(that way it wouldnt affect the bluebook value). i made them take my rims off the 00 and put them on the 07 tacoma i bought from them .they tried and told me they wont fit because they were hitting the caliper.a local tire shop AND my mechanic tell me theyd fit if i just used a small spacer.whats the major consensous here on this board about using spacers.i'd love to not have to drop another grand or so on new tires and rims after i put the 3 inch suspension lift on my 07 next week.also,can you use the low pressure sending units on replacement rims?

 

It's O.K. to use a spacer. But you need special lugs. Only because with the spacers, the stock studs are a bit short. So you won't have too much tread engagement.
I run the "spidertrax" spacers, which are 1.25" but the type of spacer they are referring to is probably a 1/4" spacer. 4wp have the lugs you need to run the 1/4" spacers.
(Oh? You can replace your studs to longer ones also. That is another option)

thanx for the reply toku.would you have any idea if by using spacers i would void my warentee.the 07 i bought is toyota certified thru 2014 covering the drivetrain front to back and i bought their extended plan for $1100 that covers pretty much everything else also thru 2014.i asked them about the lift before we signed all the papers and they said it wouldnt affect the warentee.

 

They lied! But it will only affect it IF they can prove the modification caused the issue.

Yeah for a 3" lift they really can't prove anything. Because it only changes the ride height. But it is still in the articulation range of the stock components.
They might try and mess with your for the larger tires? But if your dealer is any good they won't. Not worth it for them to loose your future business for something that Toyota will pay for.

 

it was the dealer that enabled me to get the recall.when i first called toyota headquarters wherever that is ,about the recall they told my vehicle was not included in it because my vin# didnt "match their recall list" what ever the heck that meant. i took it to the dealer and played dumb like i didnt know or had never called anyone and they wouldnt let me drive it off the lot because they said it was unsafe to operate.they put me in an 09 4runner free of charge with unlimited milage till the hole recall process was over and that took 3 weeks.

yea they took care of me.i just noticed your in hawaii,we just went to honalulu last month.my wifes sisters been there since 95 and we finally paid her a visit.my first time on an airplane by the way also

 

I'm running 5mm spacers (actually 5.2mm measured with calipers) on my front wheels to clear the calipers. I've only had them of for ~200ish miles, but so far, no problems. The lug nuts Toku58 was referring to were the gorilla 41138ET lug nuts. You can find a picture of them here... http://www.gorilla-auto.com/lug.nuts.page_08 (on page 5, bottom right corner). These lug nuts are a 12 x 1.5mm thread and they have the extended thread portion that threads INTO the lug holes of the wheel to help center the wheel on your hub. This helps to keep the tires (if properly balanced) and the rest of the wheel from being out of balance when you're driving down the road. I ordered mine from Bob as Massey at 405-239-2010.

Also, I bought HUB CENTRIC billet wheel spacers. They cost a lot more, but the cheap cast alloy stuff that's sold for ~$5 each is made in China and isn't anywhere near as strong. You may be able to find them anywhere but for $100 shipped I got mine from Fred at http://www.wheeladapter.com/ You need to tell him you have a late model Tacoma, he'll know the correct hub ID and then tell him you have a 6x5.5" bolt hole pattern, tell him the thickness you want and most importantly tell him you want HUB CENTRIC spacers and he'll do the rest.

The spidertrax might be good, but when I looked into them I couldn't find them in the smaller sizes (below ~1 inch thick).
