MPG: Base vs PreRunner 2.7L

Hey, thinking about trading in my MR2 Spyder for a new Tacoma...mostly because I'm relocating but renting my house out and need something to transport larger items around.

So, I was looking at the 4-cyl Tacoma's and they seem to be all rated at 20 city/26 highway...PreRunner or base. What kind of real-world fuel economy are you guys getting? I'd like to get a PreRunner, but if there is a huge MPG discrepancy I'll get a base model.

In theory, the pre-runner should get better gas mileage in town and the base on the interstate because of the shorter gearing on the pre-runners. If you do a fair bit of driving on both highway and in town, there is probably very little difference in the two. The pre-runners higher ride height may also have a slight negative effect on the mileage.

I've got a pre-runner and I get 24.5 avg but I don't get on the interstate much, mostly highway and in town. The few times I have taken long distance trips on the interstate with the truck I have only gotten 19-22 mpg. The engine is turning almost 3K rpms at 75 mph.

 

I see. Thats the kind of information I'm looking for, wanted to get some real-world numbers.

 

My PreRunner gets anywhere from 20-22 city and highway. I've got a fairly heavy foot though.

 

I get about 24-27 MPG on the interstate.
I get about 22-24 MPG in town.

The AC is on all the time. (Hot in Tuc-sizzle!) I drive moderate. I just broke 66k today.

 

I think using a light foot and taking your time, you will ALWAYS get better mileage in a 5-lugger vs the PreRunner. The rear end of the 5 lug is either 3.21 or 3.54, the 6 lug has a 4.10 rear end that makes it go faster at launch but run higher RPMs in most situations.

I have a PreRunner and get a combined 22~23 in the last 6 months...

City is usually 19-20. Mind you I am running 32 inch tires (265/75R-16) in a E load range. They are 51 pounds a piece and I guarantee you effect the mileage.

The Pre-Runners 4.10 gearing is going to significantly hurt highway mileage, although has quite a bit more pep then the base models.

 

the 4x4 2.7 with 4.10 rear end is rated 18 city 22 highway on the window sticker.

 

i get a pretty consistent 17 - 18 in 100% city driving with 265/75/716 with a 3" lift with a few other DIY mods at 120K miles on a 4-door pre-runner. in the lat week i upgraded spark plugs, oil and tranny fluid and cleaned throttle body so maybe that will improve things

 

5 lug...see sig for mileage. That's the average for every fill-up since the truck was brand new. I easily get 30+ on the highway.

 

Finally got 22mpg on my stock crew prerunner but I had to drive like an old lady keeping rpm below 2k.
