7300 miles and leaking AGAIN

some of you may remember my original post from about 3 weeks ago. my 07 DC had developed a leak at the input shaft on the transmission. well i took it to the dealer and they replaced the seal. they told me the seal was warped and it was no big deal. well 3 weeks later the seal is leaking accompanied with a nice thunk noise and feeling. it will be going back to the dealer on Tuesday for this and for my TSB SU006-007. of course the dealer never called me to let me know the parts were in for that. i hope this thing dosent leak a third time. isnt there a federal law about having the same problem 3 times?

 

Your report is grim, I am thinking that if it leaks again it's more than a seal, I would have them look at it to determine what is making the seal fail.

 

If it leaks a third time, then push the "lemon law" into the dealer's face.

+1 They may just replace the entire transmision this time. It could be a line bore problem.

 

OUTPUTSHAFT SEALS ARE PRONE TO LEAKS FROM ALL SORTS OF REASONS..IT MAY BE BEING INSTALLED INCORECTLY..OR THE NEW SEAL GOT KNICKED REINSERTING THE SHAFT..ASK TO SEE THE SPECIAL TOOL THEY USE TO INSTALL IT..IF THE TECH HAS NO AWNSER OR CANT PRODUCE THE TOOL FIND A NEW DEALER..IVE SEEN ALOT OF TECHS BANG SEALS IN WITH A HAMMER AND DRIFT OR A BIG SOCKET THAT FITS THE OUTSIDE CIRCUMFRENCE..GET IN TOUCH WITH THAT DEALERS TOYOTA SERVICE REPRESENTETIVE WHO CALLS ON THAT DEALER NOT A DEALER EMPLOYEE OR DEALER MANAGER..THEN THE REP WILL CONTACT THE SERVICE MANAGER AND WAIT TO SEE HOW FAST YOUR TRUCK GETS PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT...TRUST ME I KNOW...

 

yea the tool is called a seal driver i own a set. but its not just the seal. seals dont make a large KLUNK that you can hear as well as feel. there is a reason it failed the first time wich i believe is the reason it failed the second time. i heard and felt the same sound both times it failed.

 

Weird that with a new in seal installed that it's still leak. I would question the dealer to see if they really change the seal. If they did, then there is something wrong with the output shaft bearing/bushing. If this bearing/bushing is bad, no matter how many new seals you change out, with in a couple weeks of driving, the new seal will be ruin. Try moving the drive shaft side-to-side and up-down motion, if moves alot then the bearing is bad.

 

well its at the dealer. ill let you know how it turns out. there also doing the suspension TSB at the same time.

 

Right - If they cant fix the same problem after 3 tries, you have the legal right to demand a replacement (which wouldnt be so bad, considering the bad luck you've already encountered). Good luck

 

they are replacing the tail shaft assembly on the transmission. it should be ready today. ill will keep you all informed.
