CV Axles...

A few quick questions on replacing CV axles. I think mine are shot but dont have too much experince with them. I went down to the stealership and they wanted $450 for each one! I found them on JC Whittney for like $120 for each side (thats what it looks like anyways). So I was wondering if anyone has replaced theirs here? I searched but couldnt find much. How much did you pay for them? How difficult is the install? Did you get new or re-manufactured ones? Do they have any upgraded aftermarket ones that are better? And lastly does anyone have any type of write up on it? I have looked at the factory service manual but didnt see much. Thanks in advance for the help!

In my experience, CV's are easy as hell to change... however I've never changed one on the Tacoma. Most of them: just loosen the spindle nut, move hub assy aside, slide a screwdriver between CV and diff, pop and reverse to install. Theres a thread on here somewhere that has a detailed instruction.

 

I have 67K but I've had a 6" Procomp for 35K so I'm sure thats not helping out at all. I'll keep looking for a write up. Any idea on a price for them? Thanks

 

What makes you think you need a new shaft? Is it just the boots that are torn?

 

Wow I was just doing alot of research on this very topic tonight, but couldnt come up with to much info. I went looking on napas website and they didnt have any full cv axle assy according to their website, unless i'm just blind. I found those same JC

Got a question, they havent changed the CV axles since 2005 right? So if I were to find a CV axle for an 2005 it would work on any 2nd get up to a 2009 (my year truck)

I'm getting a "Clunk" sound when I go from drive to reverse or reverse to drive but only when the wheel is turned to the side. It's been about 2 weeks now that I've heard it. Really faint at first and now it's very noticable. I had rmb_crew check it out yesterday when we went out to get the trucks dirty and you can clearly hear it comming from the axle on the drivers side there.

 

Wow! That could be so many things?
Are you in 4WD while this sound is happening? Does it happen in 2WD?
If it does in 2WD then it might be your brake pads shifting position.

I had this happen from improper installation (before i got it )

 

My pads havent been touched in 5K though..... wierd if it would just start up now huh..... I can check them tommarow but it sure seemed like the noise was comming from the cv axle to me.

 

Get the CV's from an O'reilly's auto parts store if theres one near you. They will give you money for your old cv axles. I had a 1983 S-10 for a 4-wheeling truck and I replaced both cv axles with new ones from O'reilly's for $120 a piece. The guy at the store told me if I brought the old ones back in then I could get $60 a piece back, so I basically got them both for $120. I'm not sure if other auto parts stores do this but you might check.

Hell NO!!!! If any of those shafts are rebuilt ones that they have. (They more than likely are) The reason people turn them in is because they were jacked up!

It's a crap shoot if you get a good set.

I had some that I got a few years back my accord. seemed like a good deal. Little did I know the can of worms I was getting into.

My honda was never the same. Tried 4 set of CV shafts. All of them made my car shake at different speeds. I even tried to get my original CV's back and they told me it had already been sent out to be rebuilt and there was no way of knowing which shafts were mine.

Make sure if you do try them out? You confirm that the shaft they are selling is BRAND NEW!

I just had a very bad experience with auto part store CV shafts.

I can second toku's story with reman CV's. Mine never drove the same either, but for some vehicles, its the only option, they don't make new anymore.

 

The price of these makes me glad that there is someone local that can rebuild/re-boot them. I tore the boot up on mine and had it fixed for a fraction of what it would cost for a new one.

 

When we looked at it you can hear, see, and feel the cv popping when you go full to the left and than full throw to the right. It sounds definately like the cv. now i didnt watch it when he went from drive to reverse and what not but just turning the wheel not moving it will pop. Chris got any input?
