    Suggestion:

Hold off switching to synthetic oil untill around 3K miles. One general rule of thumb with synthetic oil is that you only put it in after the engine has FULLY broken in ( especially the oil control rings ). Otherwise, you may end up with a slight oil consumption issue. Yeah , I know, it's a Toyota and all but it's still a possibility.

I'd suggest not also waiting untill 12K miles between oil changes. That's a bit on the long side. Personally,,,,, unless you were getting the oil analyzed for chemical and particulate content, I wouldn't push it past 7.5K, but then again, that is just me. If your mileage is mostly highway ( not considered severe duty operation ) then maybe.

These threads kinda make me wonder. This is a question we all have had at one time or another if we give even the slightest damn about our vehicles. That means it will be in a zillion places on the net. I don't think there are many subjects that have as much misinformation as this one regarding automotive maintenance.

This one: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com is the best in my opinion. I have heard the same argument over Amsoil and Mobil 1 for years. The whole "when to change your oil" and Synthetic vs dino stuff.

Go to that site and they get nice and technical for you and viscosity charts start to show you a direction. After all the hoopla and research I chose an oil besides those two.

If you're really interested in what oil is for your needs, check it out.

    Good luck...;)

I use Castrol in my bikes because we have always done it. The Toranado seems to like Castrol.
    I am thinking M1.
On sale 10W40 is fine. The SAE is the same. Who is Lib. Arts Major to argue?

My engine was broken in with 30 W non detergent. Drained at 500. All boxes. I have the log. Then 5W30. Drained at 10,000 all oils.
    And now M1. Perhaps never.

I believe to seat the rings properly, you need to vary engine speed and load.

None currently, but I would like a better sounding exhaust and perhaps a cold air pack and some color coded step bars
Lots of good info on Bob the Oil Guy, to much for me though, you just have to figure that changing your oil any where near or before 7.5K is fine, especially when your starting out with a brand new clean engine.
I taught auto maint for adult ed. for a few years, with all the non mechanical people running around if you can get them to do their oil & filter before 7.5K they are way ahead of the game.
Now I know its not the case with lots of TW members, who love to work on their trucks, if you want to do the oil at 3K feel free but you have to believe that 4k or 5K or 7.5K is fine.
My Taco dealer suggested around 5K and I will switch the Mobil 1 between 5-7K. I also use Toyota filters, just because they are easy to get and I dislike paying $10. for a Mobil 1 filter.
As far as when to switch over to syn, anytime after your first oil change, whether its 3K or 5K., according to Mobil 1 officials.

    Wow thanks...everybody!
but whats the benefit of using synthetic oil (other than the obvious)?
i mean, you still have to change your oil every 3-4 k miles anyways right??

Biggest advantage of syn oil? Lower oil temps, as we all know high temps are the enemy of motors and syn oil will lower oil temps.

This discussion seems to have faded, so. I just turned 10,000. My first change was a dealership change. I let'em do it when they installed my new TSB all new suspension. They used Dino.
I just used full synthetic Castrol Syntec at 10,000 and got it from good ole Wally World. Syntec and all other Sythetics they stock are a couple bucks cheaper than Mobile 1. Is there anything wrong with Castrol Syntec? I have used Castrol GTX for years in motorcycles and cars. Is all this arguing splitting hairs and loyalties in the end?
Why does Mobile 1 charge 2 bucks more per 5 quarts? Is it really that much better to charge that much more? I can see Amsoil or Royal Purple charging more because they don't produce or sell near the amount of other more mass sold brands and the availability is difficult to find locally at best in most locals. Supply and demand you know. Mobile 1 seems to take atvantage of their customer. They should be able to beat them all in price. Just wonderings aloud.
