AC acting very strange!

my Air conditioner is acting really weird...the only time it works is when the fan speed is set too high...when its on high the ac blows really cold and very hard.... so i went to my toyota dealership and they want to charge me 100 bucks to diagnose so i figured i would at least ask too see if anyone had any ideas that i could work on myself.. Thank you in advance for anything

 

It sounds like your HVAC switch assembly. To get the a/c compressor to engage you need to have the a/c button pushed and the blower on. For some reason it sounds like the contacts in the fan controller are not making unless the switch is all the way on high. I have attached the a/c schematic for reference....

 

so what can i do about the resistor? is this easy to fix myself?

 

I haven't done it on a Tacoma but it is easy as getting to the resistor module, removing and plugging in the new one.. if that is the issue. So does the blower run at all in the lower speeds or not? What about in vent or heat mode? IOW when in a/c is the blower running and blowing warm in the lower speeds or is it not blowing at all in the lower speeds?? Those are important questions.

 

in the lower speeds it isn't running at all..no fan.. and completely silent... so i could potentially go buy a resistor?

 

a few weeks ago it would work in the lower fan speeds but it never lasted for more then a few minutes....it would work then stop and a few hours later it would work again for a few minutes then stop...

 

That def sounds like the resistor. Pretty common issue. It is component B4 in the schematic and is right behind the blower control panel. That just pops out, although care needs to be taken so as not to break it. I can't tell from the picture (on the component location drawing on TTORA FSM page) if it is attached to the panel or in the harness behind but it shouldn't be hard to replace. If you had the new one you would be able to ID the one in the truck and just swap it out.

So i ordered the part from my dealership and it came in today but i am having trouble finding exactly where it goes. I took out my glovebox but am having trouble locating the existing resistor. Anybody have any experience with this?

 

i figured it out.... you dont actually have to remove anything you can see it from the flooboard. Thank you again!

Yeah...did this solve the problem? I'm having pretty much the same issue with mine. No matter what setting it's on, the fan only seems to work when on high.

Also...how much was the part? Do you have the part number? I'll look on the pdf's that were posted too.

 

My a/c fan only blew on high and the fix was the faulty resistor. Under warranty (30k) so no charge

 

yes this fixed my problem perfectly. It happened on any setting on mine as well. the part cost me $51 and the part number was 87138-04050. I ended up just ordering it from my dealership because none of the car parts stores in my city had it in stock. i dont have my truck with me right now but the resistor is very easily found just by lying on your back in the passenger seat floor and looking up. its held in place by two bolts and you will be able to recognize the plastic bracket its on once you have the new part. Very easy to replace took a total of 2 minutes.

 

I ordered the part on Friday and should be able to pick it up on Tuesday. I hope it fixes it. The part here was $31 plus tax.

 

same problem resistor went to dealer 30.00 bucks easy , easy fix. But did blow again in a few months the resistor that is.....
