Rattling type noise (Diesel sound)?

I have this rattling like noise at idle. It almost sounds like a diesel at idle but much milder. The noise is even more pronounced when the A/C is on.
When I press in on the clutch, the noise goes away. The question is whther it is normal for the pressing in of the clutch to eliminate the noise. Do your manuals do the same thing? Thanks.

 

mine does it, guess its normal...sounds like its falling apart though

 

i have the same noise as well. got use to it so i barely notice its there.

sounds like a throwout bearing? haha.... I sure hope not.

 

It makes the sound in neutral with the AC on.
If you push in the clutch it goes away until you let it go
If you turn off the AC the sound disappears completely.
I know, the AC and clutch has nothing to do with each other, but this is what happens. Its getting quieter now. I don't notice as much as I use to.

Initially, I thought mine only did it with A/C on; however, upon closer inspection, I noticed it did it with A/C off as well, just less pronounced.

 

If it goes away when you press the clutch in, it's most likely the throwout bearing. The A/C shouldn't really have any effect on anything other than it's causing additional load on the engine.

 

possible, but doubtful....my truck as done it since brand new and only has 3k miles on it now. if all these trucks are coming out of the factory with bad throwout bearings we have a big problem.

 

I'm pretty sure there is a known throwout bearing issue, but I'm not sure if it's for the 4bangers or the v6's. There's be quiet a few threads on it... It's been on new trucks as well...

It's not really that massive of a deal, my G35's throwout bearing was going out for the 25k I owned it...

 

Followup: Went to the dealer this morning; alot cooler than yesterday afternoon. I could not get the sound to duplicate in the presence of the Tech (it figures). He said to bring it back in later when it is warmer to see if we can hear it. I will keep you posted.

It does go away when u step on the clutch.

 

Mine has the same noise... I've only had the truck for 6 months or so but I noticed it once I started using the AC. Seems to only make the noise at idle - when I rev it, it goes away, then when it settles to low idle it comes back.

I tried taking it in too - they couldn't duplicate it either!

Just for a noob sake - what does a throwout bearing do?!?

Update: Went to tech this afternoon. although not as obvious as yesterday, the noise was there and he says he heard it, with and without A/C on. He said he did not know what it was ( might be throw out bearing)and that he wanted to take it apart to try to see if there is anything wrong. He was concerned that he did not hear it in the morning but did then in the afternoon (I could not hear any difference when I stepped on the clutch). He did get under the vehicle this time.
I told him that I was not ready for him to take it apart just to check it out. He said he would set it up as a test case and call Toyota on Monday to see if they had any information. He told me to call back late Monday or on Tuesday. He also said that he has never taken a 5 speed apart but has the 6 speed a few times (something about some aluminum part in the area of the throw out bearing on the 6 pseed). In fact, he said that he has never seen any problems with the 5 speed.
I will follow up report once I hear anything. However, I have trouble accepting that there is a problem if so many are doing the same thing (as described in the responses to this topic).
Again, I am not at all concerned over the diesel like rattling. It is the fact that the noise stops when the clutch in pushed in and starts again when out that has me concerned. I forgot to mention that I only have about 13,000 mile on the truck and I baby it.

 

ttyler, 06dak and uood8, does the sound go away when you depress the clutch and come back when the pedal in the up position?

 

Yes it goes away when the clutch is depressed, and comes back when i let it out.
