H@LP w/TOYO OPEN COUNTRY MT 265 or COOPER STT MT 285 ? ? ?

So I've SOLD my Rim & Tire set up for an upgrade. Just wanted to go a tad bit bigger. However I'm stumped and press for time in making a decision. So here are the 2 choices I've narrowed it down to based on price and size.

If I were to go 265/70/17
I found a deal for the TOYO Open Country M/T for $180 Mounted & Balanced OTD Per Tire

If I were to go 285/70/17
I found a deal for the COOPER STT M/T for $195 Mounted & Balance OTD Per Tire

I currently have the SAW 2.5 w/TC UCA & Rear TSB as my current suspension. I will be getting a ALL PRO Rear 3' Leaf Pack soon. I know about the trimming thats needed for the 285's.

I'm just looking for you guys to help me make a dam choice. Its been hard already to narrow it down to these 2. The price is very reasonable after checking all day.

Hmm, between those I would go with the Cooper 285's. The 265's would look to narrow in my opinion.

Myself, I just bought the new Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac's in 285/70/17 today. I can't wait, these tires look awesome.

I prefer the 285s..but I don't think you could go wrong with either because the aggressive sidewalls on the Toyos make them look wider than they are imo

 

by the way, I pretty much had to cut half my fender liners off in the front and trim bout 3 inches of the bumper corners just to get the 285's to stop rubbing and thats after I raised it 2 1/2 in the front. Still love them and glad I went this size

 

i use the toyos for work its an awesome tire i beat it to hell

 

Toyos are great tires but HEAVY!!! MPG goes down.

 

Go with the 285 they look much better than a narrow tire.

 

I've always liked the Toyo's, heard a lot of good about them. But they are frickin heavy!

 

I have Toyo's on mine....not the open country but the proxies and they are bar none the best set of wheels i have had on a truck..........i wish i could give advice on Cooper sorry.....i know when my four banger needs tire, i am convinced that i want to go the Toyo route.

 

Where did you find the Toyos for that price?

 

I ran 35's toyo MT's on my previous truck and will echo the comments about them being heavy and what also should be mentioned is that they are SOFT.

Wear too prematurely... Softer the compound, the quicker they wear.
Albeit, they worked ok in the winter because of that softness..

I would never buy them again if that helps.

 

I've had 265/75/16 STT's on my Tacoma for about 1,000 miles so far and love them.

 

personally i like the TOYO because i have them =D... they arent that loud

 

Yea the tire itself may be narrow but get a wider wheel an it makes wider. That's what I did an Im getting the toyo on mine within the next couple days. An there not as heavy as you think. Depends on what size you go with. The 265 toyo is only like 40lbs per tire

 

This is an old thread now. RAD has probably worn those new tires out by now, but for anyone else wondering which way to go I put in my 2 cents worth.

I did extensive research and I too found myself deciding between Toyo and Cooper in the end. I replaced my stock P245 75R16 Dunlop PopEasys (4 ply) with LT265 75R16 Toyo OC AT2s (10 ply).

I haven't put a lot of miles on them yet and virtually no off road yet, but the feel and handling is great. I was concerned about the inevitable additional noise, but the noise increase really is only slight, very happy. You can get a lighter tire and if that's what you want then stick with your cheap, stock, soft riding, fast wearing pop easys. I got 3 flats in six months on my Dunlops. I don't feel that is safe or reliable, but ya they're a lot lighter. Feels like you can almost tie them in a knot when compared to the Toyos.

When I finally got it narrowed down to the two options I relentlessly asked guys in the business what they thought of the two. Cooper was more often stocked, but Toyo was easily ordered in quickly. Cooper is big and maker of tires for many other common brands of varying qualities, so it makes sense to me that Cooper would have a larger distribution reach and; therefore, be more commonly stocked than the smaller company of Toyo. Some guys didn't listen to me and tried to steer me to different brands that they stocked a lot of and could make better profits on, but most guys had an intelligent opinion about the two and honestly felt either brand made a reasonable product. What I began to notice, though, is how many times I heard "Toyo is twice the tire of Cooper". I think just over half of the guys said go Cooper, but interestingly none of them ever said that Cooper was twice the tire of Toyo. In the end the clincher for me, after all my previous research, was recognizing that the older guys with the most experience in the regions where truck tires were in the greatest demand did, more often than not and with greater conviction, say go Toyo.

I forgot to mention that my truck is still stock height and I didn't want to do any trimming, so I chose 265 75R16 over 285. They look good to me and I have no issues whatsoever.
