truck cap choices

Hey I see a few of you on here that has the soft truck cap for the 2007 dbl cab short bed. Where did you get them? And is there a lot of other choices for the short beds beside a soft cover?

bestop is the manufacturer of piercedtiger's. we were talking about it over in another thread and i found one for $584. i'm still hoping to get a leer shell for mine in the spring. the 100xq like pb's is what i really want i think

truck cap

I just looked at PB's. that is a great looking cap. I was thinking the soft top because of the ease to take it on and off. But If i use my canoe hoist in the garage I bet I can raise and lower the fiber shell onto my truck. I cant imagine a 5 foot shell weighing all that much. If a aluminium cap didnt look so damn cheap I would love to have the ease of that.

Hey stratton, take a look of my pictures, might help in your decision. This is a LEER 100XQ with Browning Package. For what I do (Camping, Fishing, Hunting) it helps a lot even as a temporary cabin.

I think mine was about the same, give or take. I googled it until I found the cheapest price with shipping. A lot of places were cheaper than Bestop, but then charged more for shipping. I forget where I finally did buy it from!

I got it because it's 1/2 to 1/3 the price of ANY fiberglass shell, and I don't need to mess with a hoist to take it off. And even then, the hoist is used only if I know I'll be buying something large. If I get to a store, yard sale, etc and see something I want I'll have to come back if it doesn't fit under the cap. With the Bestop I'll just fold it down. To me, that's more import than most other things. My wife and I are spontaneous.

Ok so if i do get a fiber shell. How do I clamp it to the bed. With the composite bed I dont see where to hook the cap clamps. unless i am supposed to cut away a hole in each corner of the bed. Any one have pics of this?

You need clamps that go in the tie down rail system.

Just out of curiosity, why would you cut a hole in the bed? This isn't a plastic bed liner, so you're not able to cut through the plastic to get to a metal rail.... The only metal on the other side of that plastic bed is the metal body panels. Look up in you're wheel well. It's all empty between body panel and bed. With the exception of maybe some support braces. But nothing to clamp a bed cover too.

You're the second person I've seen mention cutting the bed. So now I'm curious why using the bed rail with different clamps isn't the first thought in peoples minds. Since that's essentially replacing the normal side rails you see on every other truck.

Hey guys based on my experience the LEER Cap and probably the other too, has their own anchorage, at least LEER has it, it anchors directly with the Tacoma's bed rails, this anchors must be strengthen so they can last a life, finally this is covered by their lifetime warranty. Please check my photos there is one where I show the BEDRUG and the anchors should be seen also.

Well I was wondering about how they do it. Of course with the older style you would just cut away the bed liner to get to the metal rails. But i didnt really know that the composite bed does not have a metal rail or cap. With the clamps attached to the rails it seems like they stick to far out. It kind of looks like it was just rigged. I wish toyota would have made 4 anchor cavities for the clamps. I would have rather seen that then the two useless holes in both sides of the bed. What the heck are they actually for. Besides just holding dirt and leaves. Atleast the other side compartments have locking lids on them.

thats where i installed my cargo lights...haha but i think after everything, i'm leaning towards the fiberglass leer. if i need to carry anything thats too big to fit in there, there's always a trailer to pull behind. just my thoughts

Gotcha. The clamps stick out maybe an inch or so. Less that the tie down cleats anyway. You could probably fab up something lower profile if you wanted to. The don't get in the way for me as I try to keep objects from touching and rubbing the vinyl windows anyway.

I don't know about the side pockets either...

If Toyota put holes in the bed for clamps people would still complain that the don't line up with this cover or that tool box so I'll live with the rail system. More options/positions that way.

I agree with jhodge83, bigger cargo there is a trailer cargo for it, safe, dry and clean cargo... under the camper/cap.

Here is a photo where the Cap clamps are shown, four of them, each one of them in a cap corner and all of them secured on the Tacoma's rail system.

Yeah that looks great. The clamps seem to be low profile. For somereason i had different ones in mind. I could live with that. I would love to get a leer with side windows that open up like doors. I dont usaully use the truck bed for carrying dirt or mulch but i guess i can always use a hoist in the garage to lift it off. Any price ranges out there for a 5 foot leer.

The clamps on my Bestop have the same thing that slides in the rail so I'm sure you could make another bracket/bolt work with that if it really gets in the way. All it is is a -| shaped block of aluminum with a threaded hole. A non-threaded hole and nut would work too.
