I think nitrogen filled tires expand and contract less than oxygen during temp and elevation changes...I just check tire pressure often.

That is the pitch, and as stated above oxygen is already 79% nitrogen...

I know for a fact, from first hand experience, that nitrogen does very well at maintaining a specific pressure and is not a gimmick. I used nitrogen in my race slicks for years with much success.

As for if it is worth it... I would not pay any more than what you would to have your tires filled with compressed air. In a street car, the difference between cold and hot tire pressures are negligible. If anything, once the tire is warm your tire pressure will increase, causing you to in theory gain MPG.

FWIW, quite a few large tire service chains will fill your tires with nitrogen for no charge.

This was popular with a few of my musclecar buds back in florida because it was dry. You average shop didn't use a drier on their compressors so filling a tire was like an excited kid with a lisp spitting in your face as he talks. Not good. Also, nitrogen molecules are larger than oxygen and many other components of ambient air so it cuts back on leakage over time. Okay if free for a daily driver, not worth it for a rig that gets aired down for traction all the time.

Good for race tires, we used in the sprint car tires when we ran at PIR on the asphalt where heat would grow the tire so much that it would change the set up as they got hotter. The nitrogen helped a lot.

On a street car just stick with nice fresh dry Arizona air:D.

Aircraft tires use nitro just because of the temp and pressure changes. And the amount of weight put on the tires. No need for it on a normal vehicle.

^OK, so here's a question: What effect does nitrogen have on a tires load carrying capacity? I ask because I see you are a Navy flight engineer so I assume you will know.

nitrogen is an inert gas, so the temp has minor effects
also the molecule is a bit larger

Well aircraft tires are a lot thicker and hold about 5 times the amount of air pressure than a normal car tire does, Also the more weight the more pressure we have to service the tire to. The big thing is that the tire filled with nitro will hold pressure longer than a tire that is filled with normal air, so in the long run it will hold the weight better and stand a better chance of holding that air pressure with more weight and harder impact. It will also make the tire last longer due to nitrogen is more resistant to moisture forming inside the tire. Thats just a few of the reason why we use it in the aircraft tires. To me its not worth paying for nitrogen in a truck. Maybe a big mac truck or something.

Yes but the extreme temp changes an aircraft is subjected to it does make a difference. If you think about it we take off and the temp down here in florida is 35 degrees Celsius and at cruise alt its probably -10 or so degrees Celsius. So its a big change in temp.

Benefits from using pure nitrogen in tires? Nonsense. It's just a way for the purveyors of this "technology" to suck a few more $$ out of the uninformed.
