diff lock

OK i know this has been talked about a few times on here. but i am still unsure about what to do. i want to do the gray wire mod for my 07 tacoma trd offroad. some people are saying a relay and some are saying just a grounding wire. does anyone have this mod for their 07 tacoma. and whats the easiest way for me to do it. Does it void any warranty.

You can do either one. I have an 06, and I did the relay mod (older way). Read that thread and let me know if you have questions about it.

Oh, and if you break something while locked, play dumb at the dealership and say "it just started making noise, can you look at it?" or something like that. I doubt they'll check the wiring above the glove box.

Like a dealership trying to crank through repairs to maximize $$$ (assuming they charge book-hours for repair work that still takes less time) is going to waste time checking all the wiring in the truck instead of just fixing the broken bits.

Do you have a locker? If not, FYI it can't be engaged unless it's in 4LO on a 4wd truck. The mod allows you to "just push the button" in 2HI or 4HI and have the locker.

Just make sure you're going straight, don't try to make any sudden turns, blah blah blah so you don't wreck you or your truck.

Oh, and to the OP: The "alternative" method in the cheap/free thread is just grounding 1 wire, but if you read through my post I updated it with some issues someone ran across after doing it. I would do the relay method even if it is a bit more involved just because I've never had anything weird happen since I did it. (read the quoted part from Fortech to see what I mean)

I never understood the manual.
So, if you want to lock the rear axel you push the buttom. They say you may have to sqirm a bit. But under 5 MPH it should work. Mine locked in; according to the display.
It makes nice roostertails. But why not put it in 4L?
OK, so now how fast can you go?

Do you have a 2wd with locker Dan?

The prerunners won't engage over 5mph AFAIK.

The 4wd's MUST be in 4LO. Which means you must STOP, shift to 4LO, wait for it to engage, then do the locker. At that point the locker is only really helpful if one of the back tires is spinning or off the ground.

And the thing is, sometimes you just need a little extra traction in 2wd. Don't want/need 4wd so I use the locker. Lets me wheel in 2wd without having 1 tire spinning all the time, and still leaves 4wd as a recovery option. I also used it on a snowy road to help keep the truck straight and turn off ABS before I did the ABS shut off switch.

Makes it easier to do donuts or power slide around trails and in the snow too. Before the mod I never used it since I rarely used 4LO. Now I use it all the time. Especially breaking through snow. Cuz without the locker or 4wd on there's only 1 wheel pushing really. If one wheel loses traction, the other one ain't gonna help unless the locker is on.

I've locked mine in doing 35-45mph on a straight road. Unlock it before making any turns.

We have different manuals. Mine is an `06 Taco TRD Off Road 4X4.
I USED THE LOCK FOR FUN, BUT THERE MUST BE A REASON FOR HAVING IT.
Slip sliding around is good enough; but 4L hauls you out.
I`d bet you can lock it at 45 MPH, there is no unlocking speed limit, and I would not doubt your word, in any event.
I just do not want to hear that grinding noise before it locks up and you are in front wheel drive with the rear propeller shaft bailing wired up or towed.
Most of you know the voice of experiance.
Heck, the power train is warranteed, there is lots of snow, now is the time to find out. I have 200 acres. I can`t get into too much trouble.
