Anyone else bothered by the way the center console on the 2nd gens opens (ie, with the opening hinge on the passenger side instead of the rear)?

I mean, it's great for the driver, but my wife/co-pilot finds it annoying that she has to reach over the top when it's opened to get to anything.

We just looked at the 2010 Highlander today and that console hinges along the back edge. My wife says the Tundra also opens along the rear edge...WTF?

Why does it make sense to open one way on the $40,000 Highlander and another on our $23,000 Tacoma? Do we have to spend the extra $17,000 to get some well thought out amenities?

Can you replace the center console with a rear hinged console?

Im not too good at fabbing stuff up but I would think you could simply add some hinges along the backside

You could "probably" get a different design but it doesn't seem to bother me at all or my fiance...why doesn't she just keep her stuff in the glove compartment?? Seems easy enough lol

The last two are very good ideas...she's standing next to me and I won't have to tell her myself...

I like it. I don't keep much in there anyways. A washcloth to clean the windows, a Mini Maglite, a few pens and my checkbook.

The girl keeps everything in her own bag anyways. Only the manual is in the glove box. Oh, and Mechanix gloves.

I wish it locked....Simon opens the console with his nose.. once I came back to the truck & he had one of my cliff bars between his little paws munching away....

    Yep.
yeah that bothers me too. It's fine if i'm getting at it from the drivers side, but I often enter through the passenger side to grab stuff and it drives me nuts.
