After market locker?
Hey guys, I have my new '08 Pre Runner. The only options I have is th SR5. So since it doesn't come with a rear locking diff, is there an aftermarket one that I can purchase and put in myself?
I don't need it right now, but one day I'd like to buy a boat and this would help alot on the ramp!! |

I don't know how easy it is, but a lot of people have been going for the ARB. I'd like to do it, but it is looking pretty expensive. The ARB is pneumatically powered, so you'll need a tank and compressor.

I hate to tell you but it would have been cheaper to buy it as original equipment, so look at A.R.B. and you could also look at Richman Gear and there Powertrax series.

Do some research on lockers in general - there are different variations of traction control devices including limited slip diffs. It depends on what you need the locker for.... There are also different varieties and expenses too.
The ARB probably the most expensive as it is a full carrier change, gear setup, air compressor and air line dependant. When they're setup properly - are bulletproof and work on a dime when you press the button. I have two of them in my jeep. It's probably the best for a 'street' vehicle because its a selectable locker. Your rig will be OPEN (stock) on the street and locked when you want/need it. There are much cheaper options out there, lunchbox non-selectable lockers that you replace the spider gears, but they carry their own pros/cons and street manners. Aussie Lockers come to mind.... I don't know the details on the toyota offerings - I'm speaking in general offroad terms of knowledge.

I asked this question before on the board, but unlike you, I was and still am in a prebuy situation.
The answer was, it's cheaper to just buy a Prerunner with the locker. |

I bought my prerunner with the LSD.
If I didn't have the LSD, I would probably consider adding the LSD before a locker, but I don't offroad.

Yea I guess I should have added it with my options, but they told me that I'd have to get the off road package and it would run my 2k more. It didn't seem worth it at the time, but maybe I should have considered it!
Maybe I'll find a totalled Tacoma with thers options and swap out the rear or something. Thanks again guys! |
