Just My Truck?

Hey guys, I posted this question on ToyotaNation as well, I'm just trying to get a few answers before I take my truck into the dealer..

I have a brand bew '08 Taco Pre Runner. I've read threads about the infamous lurching and engine rev problems, but I think my problem is different. Please let me know if what I am expericncing is related or not.

When I drive my truck and start to slow down to come to a stop, right before the truck stops, it feels like the trans (auto) downshifts into 2nd gear and the truck seems to kind of shoot foward. It isn't anything uncontrollable, but when it happens it is enexpected and I usually end up in the middle of the crosswalk.

I CAN stop it, but say if I'm applying 30% brake to come to a stop, and it does this, I'll need to apply 50-60% of the brake to get it to stop, where normally just keeping 30% of the brake down will get it to stop.

Does this make sence to anyone? Are any of you guys experienceing this?

Don't buy automatic tranny's this is a common problem with automatic tranny's. My wifes highlander does the same thing, the stealer told us to basically get used to the shit. And, whaddya know, she has gotten used to it and knows how to handle it perfect now. Still sucks though.

Yup...this is OEM for automatics. Especially true for a truck that sits in fifth gear at 40 mph.

its usually from the blower kicking in from the heat-a/c. it kicks in and pops up the rpm's and it makes the truck lunge up a bit if u dont have the brakes held down good enough

Thanks for taking the time to explain this to me guys.
You jusy saved me a trip to the dealer. What you are saying makes total sence to me and as it does suck, but I think that I can live with it since I really like my new truck so much.

On a side note, my thread here has had 20 hits with 4 reply's. That's pretty good to me. This same thread on ToyotaNation has had 67 hits an NOT one reply yet. That kinda sucks. Well I think I know where I'll be spending alot of my time at now!! Thank you again!!

Man, I've heard a lot of people bashing the SB saying the LB is better (mostly on TN), but reading posts like this make me happy I went with the SB and 6spd.

Probably because this is a common complaint, and they're tired of explaining it... At least they didn't flame you... I've started spending less and less time over there due to the change in attitude I seemed to notice.

Same here.... it's somewhat of a late downshifting (so to speak) and probably all related to the computer programming. My husbands Jeep Grand Cherokee did it also. Not a big deal....
And sometimes a really l ate downshift after you've stopped for a few seconds.

You just bought it. As I said in my response on TN, it takes time for the computer to learn your driving habits. I have NONE of what you describe. \

BTW, there are plenty of complaints about the manual tranny, too. Do a search.

Yeah, I've seen some of the complaints about the manual... Sloppy shifting, long throw, blah blah blah. It's a truck, not a sports car and needs to be shifted differently than any manual I've driven before. Either way, I've never had a problem with the manual that could cause an accident or concern me with that possibility. I'm happy having none of the problems some of the auto guys complain about, or any of those I've heard about the manual.

Same here. One of the reasons I didn't get the manual (besides back problems) is that I drove one and, having owned many manuals including sports cars, I knew I'd never be happy with it. It's a personal preference is all. That debate is like synthetic vs. dino or premium vs. regular and so on...

FYI, I have the 6spd.

With manual I had to learn to hold my feet over the pedals differently, rev match, and use less pressure on the stick. When I first got it I ground the gears a little and hit the wrong gear sometimes. Once I learned the "tricks" to it, it worked flawlessly. If I fought where the stick slid to easily I hit the wrong gear and things didn't go smoothly.

With the auto apparently you need to mash the brakes harder when stopping, and hold them firmer (or shift to neutral) to prevent the lurching/surging. And maybe turn off OD on hills so the cruise doesn't make it down shift/accelerate harshly.

So I guess either way you need to drive this truck differently than others.

I know my 6spd has required more, ummm, "attention" than any other manual I've driven over the last 11 years. Guess I look at it as "bonding" with my truck.

I'll have to agree ....I visit both places still. I research the crap outta things before I commmit to anything - modifications.

This place is a lot 'smaller' with less traffic. That seems to keep it more friendlier. Just don't let this place get too popular or we're doomed ....
