No mudbug, you're 100% right. Folks that claim better mileage by running premium or tossing in octane boost are suffering from a severe case of placebo effect. Unless you've got a way to boost engine compression to take advantage of the higher octane, it's money down the drain.

what did I do to you to get a flaming post?

The records i have kept filling up with and without the boost aren't lying.

I'll make it easy on you,

MY Taco gets better mileage with octane boost, and it runs REMARKABLY better. Sorry for the confusion. apparently my Taco is different than yours.
I aplogize for the confusion. Now go get laid or get a magazine.

You can say no way all you want, but that's what I did last two trips to NY from SC.

Looks like bed cover which eliminates tailgate aerodynamic drag, thus increasing gas mileage. :)

FWIW, some stats on Tacoma inventory at 2 large local dealers..

5 out of 41 Tacomas on lot with 4 cyl. motor, roughly 1/2 inventory prerunner V6 double cabs

other dealer, 18 four cylinders out of about 40 Tacomas, only 3 have access cab, most are double cabs..

gas prices up or not, people here in the Bay Area want V6 double cabs.

I love my 4cyl. I know I get over 20 on the highway and its cheaper than my old diesel. It does everything I need it to do and does drive great but more and more I am driving like an old lady so it fits me. Enjoy what you drive!

I enjoyed my 4 cylinder engine for about 8-9 months (28,000 miles) going from Houston to San Antonio. It did great uphill and hauling. I could average 24 with ease on the highway doing 75-80 MPH.

Then I put bigger tires on it. It still has the power, but the mileage dropped 2 MPG. Some of that is the larger circumfrence of the tire and some is from the weight and tread of the tires. I average 20 MPG, but if I get stuck in traffic or gun it I am looking at 19 MPG. If I had known I was going to be averaging 20 MPG, I would have gotten the V6.

The other problem I had was going to New Mexico over Christmas. We were loaded doing 80 MPH (which is the speed limit on that stretch of I-10) with the wind against us. When I say the wind was against us - it had to have been over 25 MPH. We could barely hold 80 MPH. Most of the time we were getting passed up as I could only do 65 MPH in 4th gear. The worst part was that we got 14-15 MPG.

I wish that I had gotten a V6, but I am going to take care of the problem. I plan on putting a Turbo Diesel engine in my Tacoma. This was the reason I got the 2.7L in the first place. I didn't want to pay too much for something I was just going to get rid of.

With the diesel engine, I should average 28-30 MPG, and have enough power to pull up to 6,000 lbs (not getting 28 MPG obviously). At the same time, I will be installing a second fuel tank and a locker (either TRD or ARB).

I am currently working with Todd Herman at Diesel Toyz (http://dieseltoyz.com) to see what it will cost, and how soon I can do it. If all goes as planned, I will have this done by the end of the year.

I'm buying a 4 banger 4x4 reg cab later this year, Hopefully first of September. I don't care how slow it is or how good or bad the millage will be. As long as it can cruise 75 on a flat freeway, I'm fine. If it doesnt, I'll re-gear the SOB:-D I just want a short cab 4x4 and the only Tacoma option is a 4 banger. It will be even slower with 33's too:-D I just don't care.

If I need to go fast I drive my hot rod:)

4 cyl 4x4 5 sp. manual, drag it up the big hill from the front range north of C-Springs to the Summit County ski resorts. That's 5500' to 10000' + above MSL. The ride up I-70 toward Eisenhower Tunnel is probably one of the tougher hauls on the interstate system in terms of grade. The Tacoma handles well. I certainly downshift quite a bit on the steeper uphill sections. The 4 will lug and decay in 5th and 4th gears at full throttle as the grade approaches a sustained 6%, depending on momentum. A 20 mph semi in the right lane, with the parade of folks clogging the left lane while passing will kill the Tacoma's momentum and push you right into 3rd gear. A couple short sections near Floyd Hill and west of Georgetown have me reaching for third gear routinely, but she hums along in 3rd between 3K and 4K RPM and will still accelerate. Gusty headwinds can also kick you into 3rd. Overall, I'd say the four does all right. Certainly not overpowered, wants to rev, and will do what you ask. No way I could tow anything. But then I didn't plan to. I like my mileage on my 50 mile commute each day. Averaging 24-26 mpg so far at 6K miles. On the mpg vs. hill performance tradeoff, I'm satisfied so far.

I'm averaging 25mph, approximately 50/50 city/hwy with 2500 miles on it. Still breaking in.

I love it. Plenty of pwr. I mostly only haul lumber for woodworking projects and topsoil for the garden and it doesn't even know it's back there.

Unless you are planning on long range hauls pulling a heavy load, the 2.7L is the way to go!

Hey Rich I have a 08 Tac single cab 4cyl 4x2 and its great on gas i get about 440 miles to a full tank, performs best if used with 93 gas its also extremely reliable I sunk it once and all I did was dry the inside change the oils, filter and cleaned up the belts and it runs like new still. Its an excellent buy for sure.

If you buy good spark plugs for example Iridium? that would increase burning the fuel in the cylinder making every drop count

Mine is ok power for the driving I do(long highway). I get 20-22 with the AC 5 speed. Not much more then a V-6 but only 5400 miles, so it is still breaking in using 87 octane. Hauls my gear on weekend trips and does a load of mulch/stones no problem.

I drove v-6 and it was great, but I wanted the manual. The issues with the T.O. on the 6 speed and the additional maintainance on the v-6(timing belt, plugs, pulleys) were deal breakers. Great engines but they ruined it with the poor 6 speed and design for me. Also needing the extra octane to get the HP out of it just wasn't worth it to me. Also, I do not tow otherwise 6+auto no question. Plan to keep this truck a long time.

With just about 3500 miles, we're getting almost 22 mpg on our 4x4 2.7L. As far as power and hills, it's all been flat driving and no problems keeping up with traffic up to 80 mph (sweet spot for mpg is 60-65 or less. There's a noticeable drop off over 65).

If I had know the PreRunner had the larger tires, higher suspension and the locking rear differential to help with traction, I probably would have gone that route and gotten a few mpg's more...

Otherwise, fit and finish is exactly what I expected from a new Toyota and the truck is great to drive (it's a manual which we both like, even when I take it into NYC!)

overall mpg is just a bit above 23

dependiing on the speed limit and state, i cruise between 70 and 80 with no issues, obviously mpg go down at 80

the only issue is lack of towing power
